Enrolment In Swimming Classes Tops Previous Years

The Red Cross Swimming Instructions at Orono Park opened Monday with 130 youngsters joining from Township centres including Kendal and Starkville. Mary Ann Armstrong leads the classes now in her second year, with many beginners and tadpoles enrolled.

Ontario Department of Agriculture notes farm help is in high demand in Durham County with many requests while supply is scarce. Aphid damage affects spring grains especially barley. Orono Teams Shine at Annual Sports Day at Orono Park

Orono Park hosted its annual Sports Day on July 1 with three local teams and Kendal Bantams visiting Bowmanville. Rain delayed the PeeWee game, which ended 10 to 2 in favor of Orono, as proceeds reached about eighty dollars for park improvements.

The annual W I picnic was held at Cream of Barley Park on Thursday June 30. Mothers and children gathered about 2 30 as rain threatened. Children enjoyed watching park animals and birds. A short athletics program included races for under fives and six year olds along with three legged wheelbarrow and bubble gum races. A plump race for ladies and a shoe throwing contest followed. A picnic supper at 4 80 ended the gathering with a sumptuous meal.

Park Lands Needed In Southern Ontario

Ontario officials seek land for new parks near cities to serve growing populations. Donations welcomed. In Lindsay District Emily Park at Fee's Landing on Pigeon Lake will open a 10 acre area for parking and swimming by 1956. The Mark S Burnham Provincial Park near Peterborough covers 100 acres, with trails benches and picnic areas planned this year in cooperation with the Peterborough Nature Club.

Orono Triumphs in Intermediate Contest Showdown

Orono defeated Cobourg 18 to 11 in an intermediate game that ended as time ran out. Both teams fought for supremacy while Cobourg briefly led in the first inning before Orono pulled ahead.

Clarke Township Votes 3.5 Mill Property Tax Increase

At a Clarke Township meeting the mill rates rose by 3.5 mills over 1954, driven by a higher District High School levy tied to Port Hope and Bowmanville construction. Orono’s total rate reached 52.5 mills, up from 49.0 in 1954, with various county and school levies adjusting accordingly. The village of Orono gains a 3.7 mill decrease in its rate, offset by a $2000 grant change, under Municipal Act provisions.

Six Crono Air Cadets Attend Clinton Summer Camp

Six Air Cadets from Orono squadron will attend a two week summer camp at Clinton from August 14 to August 28. Commanding Officer Flight Lieutenant R J Taggart leads the group joined by Doug Gamsby Jim Gamsby Sandy Ritchie Danny Hall Boyd Wood and Eric Carleton in the delegation.

The joint W A and W M S annual picnic at Orono United Church on July 5 featured a 2 30 p m gathering, brief business, committee appointments for the 7th anniversary, a Citizenship program, and a notable talk by Mrs M J Tamblyn on UNESCO. Gentlemen joined for a meal as rain fell outside and plans for fall events were laid.

Recreational Program At Orono Park Sees Enrollment Surge

Ninety five children enrolled in the Orono Park Recreational Program at the start of July. Forty five of them fall within the seven to twelve age group.

Pupils Of Mrs Workman Hold Recital At Crono

The Orono United Church Sunday School Auditorium hosted a piano recital by 48 pupils from Bowmanville and Orono on Monday June 27. Mrs Workman’s students announced their numbers, Mr Workman chaired, and gifts were presented to the teacher. Tea and cake followed for attendees.

Polio Vaccination Completed for Grades 1 2 and 3

Polio vaccination for all children in grades 1 2 and 3 completed in United Counties. Dr C M Horner reports 4737 children received both doses, 90.8 percent of eligible. 32 clinic centres used with many children brought by car. Supplies included 295 syringes and 1750 needles sterilized by Cobourg General Hospital staff. The Health Unit will assist a provincial study on 5 12 year olds to assess vaccination effectiveness.

Child Activity Groups Lead Younger and Older Children

Fourteen year age group and fifty within the three to seven year group. The older group oversees Marie Lewis with help from Carolyn Jones and Jim Gamsby. They organize softball volleyball badminton and tennis. The younger group is supervised by Merle Stapleton with Ann Best and Made lon Cowan assisting. They supervise games and crafts including weaving paper mache finger painting and spider painting. They also include hikes and use of swings teeter totters and slide.

Clarke Township Maintains Mill Rate At 10.5 Mills

Clarke Township Council keeps mill rate at 10.5 for another year. The meeting covered road liability insurance updates and new auto and weed spray policies. Deputies discussed traffic control by the Province, property encroachment, and road work including ditching and culvert placement. Tenders for the Payne bridge were noted with land at $75 per acre.

Local Bred Holstein Wins Highest Honor Pat Pietje Earns Extra

Cedar Dale Pat Pietje, bred by M. J. Tamblyn of Cedar Dale Stock Farms Orono Ontario, is awarded Extra the highest Holstein bull honor. His daughters in the Fairlea herd of Norman R. Martin and Sons St. Thomas Ontario show strong milk records with high fat yields. His notable daughter Fairlea Dale Pietre is Excellent in Ecuador with record milk production.
