Police Trustees Plan Projects For 196

The inaugural meeting of the Orono Police Trustees discussed a year ahead plan. The secretary was asked to pursue a salary raise, water and sewer surveys, road work, park and Centre improvements, and potential incorporation, plus enforcing speed limits and arranging Christmas tree pickups.

County Council Approves School Board and Road Commission Posts

After committee work last week the Counties Council appointed H. E. Walkey Reeve of Clarke Township to the county road commission for a four year term. Murray Paterson of Newcastle was named to the Durham County High School board.

Durham Soil And Crop Improvement Meeting

The Durham County Soil and Crop Improvement Association held a meeting on Thursday January 12 highlighted by Douglas Parks from Kemptville Agricultural School. He discussed hay and pasture management with new grass and clover varieties and noted many farmers produce over ten thousand pounds of milk per acre while aiming for six thousand could cut costs.

Orono Hydro Proposes $4000 Upgrade Plan

G. E. Simpson chairs the Orono Hydro Commission meeting and presents January bills totaling 2674.10. Power costs exceed 1600. The plan includes completing Main St south line and extending lines to Princess Somerville Church N Mill N and Victoria Streets. Transformer capacity at Curoply Ltd to rise as system grows from 150 kW in 1950 to 520 kW in 1960. A $200 salary increase for the manager is proposed, motion seconded by R. C. Forrester.

Art Lecture Tonight in Orono on Van Gogh Display

Tonight at 8 o clock Mrs Bagnani from the Toronto Art Gallery speaks at the Orono Oddfellow s Hall on art and the Van Gogh exhibit to be shown in Toronto in February The Recreation Commission sponsors the event and welcomes all The Orono Ranger group will visit the Toronto exhibit on Saturday February 18 inviting others to join a guided tour Students and adults may contact Mrs H Samuel by February 15 for bus arrangements

Clarke Fire Committee Weighs New Equipment Prices

Clarke Township Fire Committee chaired by Kir. hoy Berry met to review the Fire Marshall office proposal. Committees were formed to price a 500 gallon pumper for Orono a 150 gallon pumper for Newtonville reposition Orono machine in Kendal and a portable pumper for Leskard. A further panel will price new buildings in Newtonville and Kendal and explore insurance rate reductions. Reports due before February 24.

Orono Choir Plans Three Act Play and Radio Broadcast

Orono Players begin casting for My Sselsarg a family comedy to be staged mid May with a 3 act format. Producer John Schoenmaker seeks cast and volunteers for sets and costumes. Also noted is Orono United Church Choir annual meeting with officers elected for 1961 and a radio broadcast invitation for February 19 at Albert St United Church Oshawa.

Orono Skating Party Raises Funds for Winter Rink

The Orono Amateur Athletic Club hosted a skating party Saturday with good attendance despite freezing temperatures. Net profit exceeded $60 to sponsor the rink for the season. An opening twenty minute hockey game pitted former players against the Orono Bantams, ending 5 to 4 for the veterans. The event also featured public skating, music by the Orene Band, and costume prizes won by John Gilbart and others.

Local Orono Residents Feature on Toronto Channel 9 TV

Over the past week Orono residents appeared on Channel 9 Toronto. Last Friday four Orono couples joined a square dance at Mark Kenny Ranch near Woodbridge, showcased on the telecast. Saturday Douglas Liveett debuted on the station with an interview and song on a program produced by him.

County Road Engineer Reports To Council On Pavement Progress

County road engineer George L Totten presented to the Counties Council detailing 155 miles or 58.6 percent of the county road mileage paved. He cited aging sections, current 20 foot minimum widths, and 22 to 24 foot lanes on busy roads. Totten urged continued road improvements, a bylaw for 265000 maintenance and 200000 construction, and argued roads benefit all residents, not just adjacent property owners. He warned industrial growth hinges on timely road service levels and intercommunity communication.
