Durham County Federation Of Agriculture Meeting

The Durham County Federation of Agriculture held its first 1947 regular meeting in Newcastle with poor attendance due to bad roads. Key items included postponement of officer elections, plans for county wide vaccination coordination, accredited herd reinstatement, and proposed county or provincial actions on fox bounty, potato producer groups, daylight saving, and tax levies. Delegates were named for the Provincial Convention in Toronto and the next meeting set for February 6 in Bowmanville with a lunch.

Charters Named Public Relations Director for PC Party

Hon John Bracken announced C V Charters of Brampton as Director of Public Relations for the Progressive Conservative Party. Charters, long a newspaper executive and former managing director of the Canadian Weekly Newspapers Association, will begin in Ottawa at once with Geoffrey Hewelcke assisting on Public Opinion.

New Farm Forum Antioch Forum Formed At Moffat Home

A new Farm Forum titled Antioch Forum began last Monday night at the home of Mr and Mrs Robert Moffat with good attendance. The group enjoyed the broadcast and discussion followed by a light supper and a sing song. Mr new Woods was appointed chairman.

Removal Of Subsidies Raises Price Of Tea And Coffee

Wartime Prices and Trade Board announced that from January 1 maximum prices for tea and coffee will revert to the fall 1942 levels. Coffee up four cents per pound. tea up eight to ten cents per pound depending on quantity. Board cited decontrol aims and subsidy elimination, noting Canada has sufficient stocks to cover demand for eight to ten months while world prices remain uncertain.

Club hires ski expert to teach Northumberland children

The Northumberland and Durham Counties ski club hires Miss Joan Weale of Toronto as expert instructor for January and February. Children must present a certificate of ability signed by Miss Weale before using the steep big slalom hill. Weale, 22, trained under Herman Garner and Luggi Fogger, spent two years in Quebec instructors’ school, and has ski patrol and St John Ambulance credentials. She won the Julian Sale Trophy as outstanding skier in teaching and racing at the Toronto Ski Club last year.

Mrs. Hayes Speaks On Community Enterprise At Orono WI

Mrs. Clarence Hayes of Georgetown Ontario was keynote speaker at an Orono Women’s Institute conference on Developing Community Enterprise. She urged expanding local initiatives to meet social problems and postwar unrest, advocating adult education and citizen participation. More than thirty attendees joined Kendal Women’s Institute in supporting the event.

Three Important Meetings In Orono Next Week

Three annual meetings are planned for next week in Orono. The Chamber of Commerce meets Monday January 18 to discuss community betterment and attracting new industries with current membership around twenty. The Orono Park Board meets Tuesday January 4 to discuss park improvements and summer recreation for families within a four mile radius.

Mrs Henry C Bowen Rears Her Forty Six Years of Marriage

Mrs Henry C Bowen longtime resident of Clarke Third Concession Newcastle area died Thursday January 2 at her home. Born 1858 to Enoch and Mrs Holmes she lived in the district most of her life apart from years at a Lake Shore farm near Newcastle. Survived by husband Henry C Bowen four children Stanley Margaret Hector and Alex two sons Ernest and Lionel predeceased her. Funeral Saturday at Mill Street United Church Newcastle conducted by Rev W W Patterson. Pallbearers included grandsons and nephews with Cecil Malley standing in. Floral tributes testified to the esteem in which she was held.

Bow manville’s John Lyle 98 dies after 80 years of service

Eldest Bow manville resident John Lyle died Saturday at age 98 in his 99th year. He arrived from Devon England in 1860 and built a long career in groceries town clerk from 1597 to 1932. A longtime Jerusalem Lodge member he served as treasurer and held many offices. Survived by two sons and three daughters.

Cecil L Powers Dies Suddenly in 1947

Cecil L Powers, longtime Clarke Township resident born in Mariposa Ontario December 7 1880, died January 1 1947. Survived by wife Evelyn two sons Roy and James a sister and one grandchild. Funeral January 8 1947 at Orono United Church with interment in Orono Cemetery. Pallbearers listed.

An Orono Horticultural Society annual meeting is set for Tuesday January Mth. The group emphasizes beautifying homes and aiding flower and shrub cultivation throughout the year.

Kendal Welcomes First English War Bride

Kendal hosts Doris Hall and Leonard Buckler at a New Year Eve dance in Orange Hall. The welcome included speeches, gifts, and a song, with Mrs Hartwell Lowery on piano. Community members praised Leonard’s service, welcomed Doris, and a toast followed. Separately, Court Duffins No 1626 of Pickering honored Bro. C. Lockwood with a past chief ranger jewel and outlined 1947 plans and installations.

Dairymen See End Of Butter Subsidy

Dairy farmers of Canada expect the 10 cents a pound butter subsidy to be removed soon as foremen consumers face higher prices. Toronto retail price stands at 44 cents. The Dairy Farmers of Canada annual meeting in Toronto January 17 and 18 will review the whole milk and butter situation. Farmers say they cannot absorb losses from subsidy removal due to higher costs for feed labor and equipment.
