United Kingdom Agrees to 60 Million Pound Bacon Deal
In the House of Commons on Tuesday January 3 Rt Hon J G Gardiner announced a new bacon contract with Britain at 29 cents a pound for Wiltshire sides and 32.5 cents to producers in Canada covering 60 000 888 pounds with a 3 5 cent Canadian subsidy. The subsidy is to end July 1 1950 and may lead to the removal of export controls enabling Canadian ships to sell pork to the United States. A Toronto firm predicts a 4 to 5 cent reduction in wholesale pork prices, likely passed to consumers.

Marcus Soper's funeral was held at Kendal United Church on Tuesday December 27 his 65th birthday. Friends filled the church as hymns were sung and Rev H A Bunt spoke of his uprightness and far sightedness. He had long served as a church steward and was born on a Kendal farm to pioneer stock. Floral tributes testified to the esteem he was held in. pallbearers included L D Bell William Robinson Harper Carscadden John Patton Roy Mercer Milton Robinson. He will be missed as a good man.

A survey by the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests shows Northumberland and Durham counties pay 50 dollars per wolf killed, 25 more than the standard bounty. Other counties add 10 to 35 dollars, with some townships adding further sums. The province bears full cost in unorganized districts and reimburses counties at 40 percent when paying more than 25 dollars.
