Banspiel At Oshawa Crowns Cowan In Boxing Day Event
Oshawa December 27 saw R A Cowan edge Ed Young for top place in the Boxing Day banspiel at the Oshawa Curling Club. Cowan joined W Carlton Mel Crankwright Scotty MacCowan and others to form a winning foursome, while Young finished with three wins for 25 plus 5 and second place. Nels Findlay led two-win group with a 14 point plus, and Bert White’s Oshawa four claimed fourth.

Mines Mechanisation Training Centre trains British miners in mechanised methods
The Mines Mechanisation Training Centre in Sheffield, set up by the Ministry of Labour and National Service at the request of the Ministry of Fuel and Power, offers six month courses for skilled electricians mechanics unskilled underground workers and machine operators. Short courses extend workers’ skills for collieries. Pupils receive instruction on up to date American and British mechanised mining equipment under pit conditions with salaries paid by colliery managements.

Ontario Hog Producers Marketing Scheme Passes by Wide Margin
The Ontario Hog Producers Marketing Scheme was approved by 98.6 percent of voters with 29,353 in favor and 205 against among 29,757 ballots cast from 31,796 eligible producers across 42 counties. Grey County led in turnout, while seven counties reported unanimous support. The results are submitted to the Minister of Agriculture for action under the Farm Products Control Act.

Andrew J. Knox Obituary Prominent Orono Citizen Dies
Orono mourns the death of Andrew J. Knox at 72 on December 24. Born 1873 in Aevourg he became a leading beekeeper with eleven apiaries in Clarke Darlington and Hope townships. He married Lena Tamblyn in 1893. A gifted musician and temperance advocate, he led church and band orchestras and collected firearms. Survived by two sons Frank and Charles and daughter Mary. Funeral at Park Street United Church December 26 with interment in Orono Cemetery.

Orono Midgets Suffer 11 2 Defeat At Cobourg
On December 28 the Orono Midgets and Juveniles visited Cobourg for their first organized hockey games. The Midgets showed attacking pressure but were outpaced by Cobourg twelve players, losing 11 to 3. Dean West scored for Orono as Cobourg dominated the game with early goals and a six goal burst in the second period.
