Toronto Men Fined Under Hope By-Law
Three men from Toronto appeared before Magistrate R B Baxter in Port Hope on December 23 over a limited hunting by law under Hope township. Michael Santomieri 27 was fined 100 dollars plus 9 dollars costs or one month in jail for shooting on EH Ruthven’s land December 11. He faced extra 15 dollars and 3 dollars costs or five more days for trespassing on Ruthven’s property. Pat Santomieri 34 and Nick Interlino 55, both of Toronto, were fined 15 dollars and 3 dollars costs or seven days each for trespassing after entering Ruthven’s land on December 11. Magistrate Baxter criticized city hunters entering countryside properties to shoot and fish, passing comment on enforcing landowner permission rules.

Christmas Eve Fire Destroys Bewdley Store and Restaurant
A fire on December 24 at Benson's Ship and Shore in Bewdley caused about 29000 dollars in damage to the store and restaurant. Mr and Mrs Benson and their three children were in the apartment above when they alerted the town and moved furniture outside. Fire crews from Bewdley Port Hope Cobourg Millbrook used ice holes in Rice Lake to extinguish the blaze and fight the flames spread along the street toward nearby cabins and the Bewdley Hotel. Mrs Benson first noticed the fire and raised the alarm.
