Orono Guides And Brownies Banquet Draws Large Crowd

More than 100 mothers and daughters attended the annual Orono Girl Guides and Brownies banquet at the Orono United Church Sunday School Auditorium on Tuesday night. The event featured a banquet, a First Aid demonstration, a semaphore lesson, a Lord Baden Powell tribute, and a guest talk by Hazel Winter linking the movement to Good Citizenship.

Orono Juniors Prepare For Playdowns

The Orono Juniors ice hockey team prepares for Ontario Junior D playdowns with first practice this Friday on Newcastle ice and a second in Orono Tuesday evening. Eighteen players from Newcastle Kendal and Orono join the squad, sponsored by the Orono Amateur Athletic Association. In a recent local arena game Orono beat Kendal 9 6 with Gary Cooper scoring four goals and Reg Willets two.

Sabrina Fair comes to Orono in late March

The Orono Amateur Athletic Association presents the Broadway hit Sabrina Fair a four act romantic comedy. Cast includes Jo Ann Rutherford Mary Rutherford George Collins Don Staples Hazel Robinson Carolyn Jones Jim Pollard Orville Chatterton Vic Auger Reta Barr staged at Township Hall Orono for two performances.

Forty villagers gathered at the Northway Restaurant to honor Mr. and Mrs. Sandy Russell. The couple, surprised guests of honour, will soon move to Sault Ste Marie due to Mr. Russell’s transfer by the Department of Lands and Forests.

County approves 37000 equipment purchase for roads

Northumberland and Durham counties authorize more than 37000 dollars for road maintenance equipment at Cobourg meeting. Purchases include a Western grader from Sawyer Massey Co for 17800, a four wheel drive truck from A M Kerr for 15245 with 5500 insurance funds, two Simcoe heaters at 2175 each and a cleaning attachment 135. Budget remains within 85000 allocated by Counties council and engineer George L Totton. Chairman Ray Bothwell.

Ken dal Women's Institute February meeting at Mrs Stoker home

The Ken dal WI met February 18 with president Mrs E Couroux presiding. Members greeted each other with small brown bags and discussed a March 25 color home course. An apron patch drive and a travelling basket idea were adopted to collect items. Mrs Jack Stapleton led the program on simple country pleasures with cutter rides on the Sixth Line and horse riding replacing bicycles in winter. Members cut wool to guess waist size, each earning a rosy ap ple. The meeting closed with song The Queen, refreshments, and thanks to Mrs Stoker from hosts Mrs Martin Manders and Mrs Couroux.

Newcastle Mare Receives Fourth Polio Vaccine Shipment

The Northumberland Durham Health Unit reports a timely delivery of polio vaccine two weeks early. Clinics start for all children from six months to high school with first doses in Bowmanville Cobourg Brighton and Campbellford. Second doses follow four weeks after the first. Further clinics will cover beginners and unvaccinated elementary children and third doses for those with two doses last spring.

Orono Teams Lead Millbrook Hockey Trip Night

Hockey players from Orono traveled to Millbrook on Tuesday evening with three teams the Atoms PeeWees and Bantams The Atoms 8 and 9 year olds won but by a smaller margin The PeeWees drew 4 4 after sixty minutes The Bantams beat Millbrook 6 8 with a late surge The Orono squad features players such as Terry Graham Charlie Reid David Green Gary McMackin and Neil Hooey with more listed as part of the visiting group.

Sixty Children Demonstrate Skating Skill At Orono Arena

The Orono Skating Club staged a Saturday evening display at the Orono rink with about sixty children performing figures dancing and free skating before an audience of around three hundred adults and children. Adele Myles directed the program with senior girls junior groups and duos showcasing stages from figure eight to bunny hop and twosomes.

Durham County Federation Seeks Folk School Applicants

The Durham County Federation of Agriculture met at the Moffat home in Orono on February 14. Due to poor roads only fifteen from Clarke and Darlington attended, and topics included insurance committee changes and Folk School plans for March 21 to 24. Applications will be received by Fieldman Jack Arnott, with delegates to be funded.

Life Membership Awarded to Miss E Penfound by W A

The February meeting of the Woman's Association drew 40 attendees. Miss Stella Penfound received a life membership certificate after a devotional, remarks by Mrs. Drummond on Christian stewardship, and thanks to Past President Mrs. E Rainey. A tea at the parsonage followed with spring flowers as a centerpiece.
