Ontario Racing Commission grants fourteen days of harness racing for Orono this year starting July 2. Negotiations involve Durham Central Agricultural Society, Fair Board, and Orono Turf Club to host night racing with portable lights, new stands, stabling for about two hundred horses, and rail improvements. Hog Producers Elect Four Local Directors in Durham County
Hog Producers met in Orono Town Hall on January 17 chaired by Lawrence Staples. Bruce Taylor presented a sound financial statement audited by Chater and Dalrymple. Nominees for four board seats were Staples Taylor Stinson Malcolm Kennedy. Kennedy withdrew, acclamation for the others. Directors for Durham County were elected and door prizes awarded to Herb Morton Charlie Morton and Glenn Larmer.

Junior Gardeners To Hold Bird House Competition
The January meeting of the Junior Gardeners was held January 25 at 7 00 p m in the Guide Hall Grono Municipal Building with 30 members present. Captains were appointed and tasked with notifying team members and increasing membership. The group will host a bird house competition in March and a poster competition demonstrated by Mrs Fairbrother at the February meeting.

Oshawa Mayor Seeks Nordair Meeting Over Possible Suspension
Oshawa city officials led by Mayor Christine Thomas have asked the Air Transport Board and Nordair to notify the city if Nordair applies to suspend Oshawa air service. Nordair officers should meet with city representatives before any change. The city has not yet received formal word, despite a telegram hinting at possible suspension.

Christmas tree plantations create land use problem
A Forestry official told the Ganaraska Conservation Authority in Port Hope that unwise rapid planting of Christmas trees has left ill-cultured stands, abandoned clearings, and costly cleanup. He cited Scotch Pines as a liability, costing about 150 dollars per acre to remove and projecting 25 years to restore forest quality.

Frederick B. Lovekin of Clarke Township died at Memorial Hospital Bowmanville Friday January 26 after two years of ill health. He was 77, born in Clarke Township in 1885, married Sarah Robinson in 1816, a fruit grower and longtime Clarke Council member. Orono District Credit Union Meets. Assets Exceed $20,000
The Orono District Credit Union held its regular meeting on January 23 in the Co-op Board Room. President Percy Werry oversaw as Treasurer A. New Memorial Hospital Wing Opens in Bowmanville
Bowmanville residents gather January 26 to dedicate a 1.25 million dollar Memorial Hospital addition. The 118-bed three story wing includes a chemistry lab, haematology and bacteriology, physiotherapy, an emergency admitting department, X ray suite, and offices for director of nursing and administrator. The hospital will house 326 chronic cases and 48 beds for others on the upper level with full pipe oxygen and individual facilities.

Bowmanville Council Backs Darlington Pact Fire Coverage
At a special Bowmanville Town Council meeting the Fire Committee was authorized to negotiate a 1962 Fire Protection Agreement with Darlington Township. The Bowmanville Volunteer Fire Brigade will not respond to Clarke Township calls because one truck must remain for local calls and the other is reserved for Darlington duties.
