The Orono School annual meeting for S. 4. No. 12 drew 62 attendees as Mrs. H. E. Millson was elected to the school board. Horace Best reported the lease with the High School Board continues to June 30 1961 at 6500 annually with potential renewal.
Lindsay District supplied two 45 foot and two 20 foot spruce trees for Parliament Buildings in Toronto. The trees are lifted, trimmed to regulations, and transported to be erect in front of the main building with decorations, bringing Ontario forest beauty to the city.
An 86 year old Kendal resident was taken to Port Hope hospital after a two car collision at Peter and Nelson Streets. A panel truck driven by Wallace Payne stopped for oncoming traffic when Ar thur W. Thompson’s car arrived. The Kendal vehicle skidded on ice and struck the rear of the Payne vehicle. Thompson’s mother sustained a head injury from the dash. Thompson’s car damage about 300 dollars and Payne’s about 75 dollars. No charges were laid.
Officers elected for the new season of the Northumberland and Durham Plowmen Association include Don Budd Port Hope past president Gordon McGee Brighton president Stanley Allin Orono 1st vice president Bruce Eagleson Cobourg 2nd vice president and Ralph Banbury Brighton secretary treasurer. Directors listed include Reg McCann Brighton Wesley Down Jack Dorland Hilton Earl Drope Harwood Gordon Macklin Frank Tinney Rev Bickle Cobourg Edwin Wilson Garden Hill Mervin Heard Port Hope Will Allin Howard Allin Newcastle Howard Henry Howard Quantrill Campbellmere Howard Cryderman Bowmanville Joseph Thompson Millbrook. Honorary officers are L W Larmer Millbrook and Percy Gooding Hilton.
Crono Town Hall hosted the annual La Danse Noel as 175 students danced to Paul Milincola eight piece orchestra. Toronto singer Diane Pierce performed intermission songs with pianist John Ford. Decor featured Eiffel Tower art, snowflakes, and green white streamers. Lunch was buffet style in the basement as the student body enjoyed a festive evening.
The Orono Police Trustees held their final 1960 meeting in the Orono Hydro office. They discussed improving school area safety, road sign requests to Clarke Township, and cooperation with school boards. Heating upgrades at the Community Centre were noted and gas unit purchases considered.
Two masked men with a gun attempted a hold up at the Dominion Store on Queen and Walton Streets in Port Hope Thursday night. James Lester, manager, fled after being ordered to stop and return to open the back door, calling police from the Royal Grill nearby.
