Park St Sunday School Child First Term Ends At Orono Guild

The Orono Homecraft Guild wrapped up its first term with 11 meetings, carols, talks on Xmas planning, and project displays. Speakers praised the group, gifts, wrapping, and sharing among members, with prizes awarded and plans for monthly meetings in winter. The Mothercraft class also finished its course, with monthly meetings planned and pattern returns requested.

Park St Sunday School Presents Xmas Cantata Santa and the Givers

The Park St Sunday School children present a three act cantata Santa and the Givers directed by Mrs Milton Tamblyn on Monday December 23 at 8 pm under Goodwill Class sponsorship. Admission asks adults to pay 28 cents and children free with a child friendly treat for attendees.

Exhibitors Of Durham County Do Well At Winter Fair

The Grain Seed Potato and Corn exhibits from Durham County clubs performed strongly at the Royal Winter Fair. Six Durham entrants won a total of 28.00 in prize money, with top placings across the Senior and Junior Grain Club classes. The samples were cleaned by Garnet Rickerd of Bowmanville.

The December Wo man s Christian Temperance Union meeting hosted guest speaker Mrs Seymour of Enniskillen the Provincial Treasurer. President Mrs Walsh presided as Christmas carols and a devotional by Mrs Wittlewood opened the program. Rev Littlewood urged fact based temperance, and Mrs Seymour spoke on Ye shall find the Babe, urging self reflection and dedicating lives to God. A musical solo by June Wood and a social tea followed.

Christmas Teen Age Party Announced For Saturday Night

The town hall basement hosts a Christmas party for teens and friends this Saturday at 8 PM with 25 cent admission. The event includes a regular monthly meeting, and there is mention of membership cards priced at 1.00 that grant voting and access to meetings. Adult teen input urged for a successful social season.

Death of Russell J. Best After Roof Accident

Russell J. Best died Tuesday December 8 from a rooftop accident at a new Centre Street house. He was the eldest son of the Best family, married to Bertha Coram in 1910, with daughter Stella. Funeral Friday was led by Rev. Littlewood, with many friends in attendance from Orono, Leskard, Kirby, and nearby communities. Interment followed at Orono Cemetery.

Orono Times Raises Annual Price to 1.50

The Orono Times announces a price increase to 1.50 per year starting January 1 in response to higher paper costs. Arrears remain at the old rate through December 31 1948, and new subscriptions after that date will pay 1.50.

The Oddfellows dance and draw at Orono Town Hall on December 13 netted about 450 for community welfare. Donald Hamm’s orchestra supplied music as tickets drew Betty the doll and prizes including turkeys geese and cash. Invitations for the December 26 Orange dance were sent out.

Tuberculosis Control Efforts and Public Health Activities

The Tuberculosis Associations and local service clubs boosted the control programme with public participation through Christmas seals. Mass x ray surveys and monthly clinics were supported, while health nurses performed 27 prenatal, 201 infant health supervision, and 54 preschool visits. A public health doctor trained in Toronto aided field work, and Miss M Bernardo helped supervise crippled children with Unit nurses.

Removal of Sugar Rationing for Canned Fruit Victory

Public reluctance to provide sugar coupons led to lifting rationing on canned fruit and cranberry sauce. Stores report ample supply as jams jellies marmalade honey syrup and sugar still require guest coupons. The action cites strong fruit packing and aims to increase available sugar preserves by about 314 percent while clarifying pie fillers fruit fillers and bakery items.
