Ontario Holsteins led with nine All-Canadian wins in fifteen classes and 42 breeders from 19 counties shared honours. Clarke Township Council Ends Year with Budgets and By Law

Clarke Township Council held its last meeting of the year on December 15 in the townhall council chamber with all members present. Minutes were read and approved. motions covered fuel questions, medical care continuity, payment of bills, a by law on nomination meetings and election date, and appointing deputy returning officers and poll clerks. Bills paid included salaries, health board, schools, road vouchers, and other expenses, totaling numerous items. This completed the year’s business.

C. G. Keyes of Ottawa on advisory committees said a large synthetic rubber plant in eastern Canada will be able to meet the armed forces and essential automobile needs by September 1948.

Bracken Chosen Conservative Leader at National Convention

Premier John Bracken of Manitoba won the Progressive Conservative leadership on the second ballot at the national convention with 538 votes. He overcame M A MacPherson and John Diefenbaker as Howard Green and H Stevens withdrew. The party now seeks a House of Commons seat for him, likely in Selkirk or another Manitoba riding.

Thirteen Join Reserve Anti Aircraft Platoon at Orono

Thirteen youths answered the call on Monday to join Orono’s anti aircraft reserve platoon. Drill nights are Tuesdays and Thursdays with Major O Neil seeking twenty to thirty recruits. Recruits will be based in Orono unless invasion requires deployment.

Butter Saving Plan Urges Canadians to Trim Use

J G Tegeart food administrator of the WPIB asks every Canadian to cut butter by one ounce weekly until spring when production rises. An ounce equals two tablespoons and the goal is to save roughly a teaspoon a day per person, promising hundreds of thousands of pounds saved weekly with no hardship.

Call To Army Draft Expands To Married Men In January

Canada broadens the national selective service, calling married men age 19 to 40 in phased groups starting January 1. The plan targets single men 19 to 40 who have not been called or failed to report, with forms available at post offices and penalties for noncompliance. Dependency alone does not grant postponement, and essential war work can qualify for delay.
