District Fair Association Meets At Orono For Farm Improvement Plans

The Local District Fairs Association met in Orono with about forty delegates from the Agricultural Societies of Durham Peterborough Victoria Maliburboin and Ontario Counties. They reviewed year results set dates for next exhibitions and discussed farm improvement contests and support. A free lunch was served at Town Hall and the group planned to reconvene in June for the district convention.

Lowerys Celebrate 25th Anniversary With Family Gathering

On Monday evening November 29 relatives gathered at Lyall and Joyces Lowery home to honor their twenty fifth wedding anniversary. Guests enjoyed cards crokinole and music as a three tier cake and Coronation flatware were presented.

Fancy Figure Skating Club Forms New Schedule

Miss Dianne Hambly engaged as pro for Drone Figure Skating Club this season. Lessons split into four groups on Thursday evenings. Membership fees include family discounts and fund-raising participation penalties. Obtain membership card by December 24 to join first lesson. Private lessons available 6 to 8 pm and after 10 pm.

Ontario potato yield set at 177 bushels per acre

The Ontario Department of Agriculture reports 1948 average potato yield at 177 bushels per acre. The 500 bushel Potato Clubs contest shows many clubs nearing 500 bushels and highlights top growers and prize winners at the Royal Winter Fair.

Rolling Log Breaks Leg of Mr. George Butters

An accident injured Mr. George Butters when a trailing log struck his leg while hauling dogs on his property near the village. He rode home with help from his horse, later treated at Oshawa Hospital where two leg fractures were found. Neighbors extend sympathy ahead of Christmas.

Fox Hunters Fail to Bag Fox in Dot Hunt

A hurried dot hunt by the Orone Fish and Haunt Club drew twenty hunters who traveled to the hills near the sixth line. No foxes were found and the group spent time shooting pigeons instead, bringing home twenty two birds before dining at the Queen's Hotel in Newcastle.

No 9 Card Party draws crowd and prizes

The No 9 School Section card party and draw Saturday evening attracted a large crowd with about twenty tables for Five Hundred and Euchre. Prizes went to Miss Shirley Brunt, Newcastle. Mr Clarence Turner, Orono. Miss Edna Hurst, Toronto. Mr George Calder, and others, with a home cooked Christmas cake won by C Leslie Gibson of the Toronto University area. A homemade cookie and cake lunch ended the event.
