The Orono Township Hall hosts a Santa visit this Saturday at two o'clock with a 3 PM entrance. About 300 children are expected to receive fruit and candies from Santa after a short program and films. The event is sponsored by the Orono Chamber of Commerce.
A Durham County alert reports counterfeit ten dollar bills in circulation. Two notes passed in Bowmanville were spotted by Mildred Wilson, a Bank of Montreal teller. The fake bills share the same serial number TD 3886217 and show Ottawa January 2 1937 on the front.
Marlene Cantrell, a Blue candidate, was born in Orono and attended Orono Public School. She currently studies in Orono High School as a tenth grader, taking music lessons with history and Latin listed as favorite subjects.
Officials of Ontario Agriculture urge timely seed potato orders as good seed is essential for profitable crops. High quality seed is sometimes sold as table stock and diseased or uninspected seed lowers yields. Buyers should obtain the certified seed lists showing grower addresses, varieties, grades, and quantities, and contact Agricultural Representatives or Seed Certification offices in Ontario or Winnipeg if needed.
Dr J A Butler of Newcastle and member of Durham Lodge A F and A M was presented with a 50 year jewel by Rt Worshipful Bro Gordon Bunker Oshawa. Butler joined the lodge on September 2 1898 and moved from Toronto to Newcastle in 1914 where he joined Durham Lodge and served as Worshipful Master and Secretary.
A high school girl plans to attend a Normal School to train as a public school teacher. She previously cared for her baby sister during the summer and now edits for C.C.S. keeping readers informed about local happenings. A correction notes Mr Sutton is foreman at the Forestry rather than superintendent as stated last week.
The Armstrong Brothers John and William report rapid growth in their Christmas tree business. They have cut 24 000 trees this year with twelve carloads shipped to Indiana polos and four trucks delivering locally. They expect 150 000 trees sold this year if supply allowed and foresee 34 000 ready in 1951, reaching 100 000 in four years and about 200 000 thereafter. The industry provides seasonal employment in Orono and could become a million dollar enterprise.
The Newcastle Lions Club sponsors a cash bingo at the Newcastle Community Hall tonight. For fifty cents participants play 21 games plus a jackpot carried over to December 28 if not won. Special games and door prize add appeal as the club plans to hold cash bingo every other Thursday beginning tonight.
The Oddfellows Service Club of Orono invites all to its annual dance and prize draw at Township Hall on December 15. Ruth Wilson's orchestra provides music for the evening. The main draw features a doll Miss Betty with ten one dollar bills, plus a go cart, and fifteen additional prizes including five turkeys geese and ducks. Admission is fifty cents.
The Christmas meeting of the Evening Auxiliary at the Masonic Hall elected officers for 1951 with Mrs. H Allin as President and Mrs. C Billings as Vice President. Other posts included Secretary D Bailey Treasurer Miss J Rainey and Pianist B Berry with assistants and group leaders named. A candle light service and Christmas readings marked the closing hours of the pleasant evening.
A financial report on the Durham County Federation of Agriculture was presented at a Pot Luck Supper in Newcastle. Treasurer Walter Reynolds announced a January 1 1950 balance of 2726 dollars, 3001 dollars in donations and dues, year expenses totaling 3590 dollars, and a year end balance of 2874 dollars expected to rise with delinquent township levies.
Phyllis Jean Baxter and Donald Sawyer wed at St Andrew’s United Church Oshawa on Friday December 6 Reverend George Telford officiated. The bride, daughter of Mr and Mrs C E Baxter, wore ice blue Chantilly lace gown and pearls, attendants included her sister Mrs J W Alpin, best man L R Sawyer, and ushers C J Baxter and C S McColm. The reception followed at The Sign of the Gate with family outfits in laces and blue tones. The couple left for Montreal and plan to reside in Oshawa.
The Orene Athletic Society forms a committee led by Fred Lycett A E West James Tamblyn and S B Rutherford to run hockey for two age groups Group 1 12 to 15 and Group 2 under 12 with set ice times on Tue Thu and Sat Public skating for school children is Thursday 4 to 6 pm Membership is 1.00 payable to A E West Deadline January 15 1951 Players should bring skates and sticks A list of interested boys includes Bob Knox Jim Gamsby Everett Couvier Jack Williams Ronnie West and others in both groups with further signups encouraged through Mr West.
Mrs. E Barrowclough visited Mrs. McHolm in Morrish Sunday afternoon. Mr and Mrs Dawson of Morrish visited with Mr and Mrs Payne. Mrs Allan Clarke and Mrs C Payne attended a quilting at Mrs A Thorndyke’s on Wednesday afternoon. White Gift Services were held at Sunday School and all gifts go to the Children’s Aid Society of Port Hope. Mrs Thorndyke and Mrs Clarke decorated the church with Christmas trees a cradle and Christ Child.
In Orono the Holstein Friesian Breeders Banquet drew 150 county breeders and wives. W. P. Watson Ontario Livestock Commissioner spoke on agricultural progress and future plans, praising farmers and cautioning that prices and efficiency determine true profitability. A luncheon and awards followed, with local honors for M J Tamblyn and Cedar Dale Stock Farms. A Yukon note reports 81 degrees below zero.
Miss Phyllis Baxter, destined to wed Donald Sawyer on December 6, received multiple pre nuptial showers. Mrs. L. R. Sawyer hosted at King Street East with help from Mrs. Marshall Cliff and others. Additional gatherings at Mrs. D. W. Wilson’s home featured gifts including an electric mixer from local printers and a lamp from the engineering staff at Duplate Laboratory.
Harold and Kathleen Hooey were honored at the Town Hall on December 9 with a Silver Wedding Anniversary party. About 125 relatives from Orono Bowmanville Oshawa Peterborough Toronto Montreal and Buffalo attended the well wishing event with gifts a chest of silver and a festive lunch and cake.
