Orono Trustees Approve Princess Street Triplex Plan

The Orono Police Trustees approved a resolution for two triplex apartments on Princess Street by J O Chowski with a condition for off street parking for two cars per unit. Opposition letters and health unit approvals appeared in this issue. The board also noted water pumping figures, garbage removal costs, a new by law proposal, and upcoming parking line work.

Letter Opposes Apartments in Orono on Princess Street

A signed petition from about twenty eight Orono residents opposes the building of two triplex apartments at Church and Princess streets. They fault bypassing the Township Planning Board, warn of drainage and water concerns, and quote by law restricting low lying land. They urge adherence to the by law and planning board input and question health department approvals.

Five Charged In Oshawa Co-op Break-In

Five young men from the Oshawa area were apprehended after an alarm at the Durham Farmers County Co-operative at 1 45 Monday morning. They are to appear in court on September 12. The five were released on bail. Two were arrested at the co op early Monday and three later in Oshawa. Nothing was taken from the building.

Orono Tyke Team Wins Open in Ontario Playdowns

The Orono Tyke baseball team defeated Fenwick 5 to 3 in Fenwick to take a 1-0 lead in the best two of three semi final. Keith Powell pitched well for Orono and Dom Ferren had three solid hits in four at bats as local boys led from start to finish. A second game will be at Orono Park this Sunday at 2:00 PM with the winner advancing to the Ontario final.

Three Term School Year Planned Across Ontario

Ontario schools switch to a three term year with holidays between terms. Term one runs Sept 5 to Dec 22, term two Jan 3 to March 21 with adjustments, term three ends June 30 or the preceding Friday if needed. Easter holidays replaced by Good Friday and Easter Monday.

Clarke Public School Board Meeting Discusses Expo Visits and Accounts

Clarke Township Public School Board met August 14 with all members present. They were informed visits to Expo would continue from September 11 to October 20. Secretary-Treasurer presented accounts totaling 6448.90 for payment with a revision to 4950.24 after specific conditions. Jas Stutt moved and James Lowery seconded the motion to approve payments with a disallowance for Harvey Partner Ltd. regarding a boiler replacement at Orono Public Schools.

Curvply Wood Products Picnics at Waltena Park

Curvply Wood Products in Or ono held its annual company picnic on Sunday August 27 at Waltena Park in Newcastle. About 150 adults and children attended enjoying games for all, a long buffet lunch, and prize chances with winners including Susan Nieksen Peter Hope Alice Pruner Joanne Munneke Pat Harness Frank McCarthy Tammy Boughen Mary Clapdorp Siegfried Block and the Block duo Alfons DeSmedt Inerid Block. Attendees thanked management and organizers, hoping for an annual event.

Large Entry In Junior Flower Show In Orono August event

The Orono Junior Gardeners Club held a major flower show on August 24 at the Orono United Church auditorium, with 175 flower entries and 19 garden entries, judged by Bowmanville Kiwanis Club. Jamie Quinton won top junior points and will receive the Kiwanis Trophy in December, as visitors from nearby towns attended and prizes were awarded across junior and senior classes.
