Health Unit Survey Finds 79 of 149 Wells Satisfactory

Northumberland Durham Health Unit reviewed Orono wells finding 105 satisfactory, 23 suspicious, 21 unsatisfactory, with 29 located near septic systems. The report recommends immediate consideration of a municipal water supply and notes widespread overcrowding and substandard well construction. It highlights contamination risk and the need for proper well and sewage siting.

Cyclist Lloyd Leads Then Loses Canadian Motorcycle Race at Mosport

Ivor Lloyd of Toronto led the Canadian Championship at Mosport Park until a primary chain failure on the 27th lap ended his run. Bob Webster of Toronto overtook to win, with Ed La Belle of Philadelphia close behind. The crowd was among the park’s smallest since opening. Lloyd later claimed the Gold Cup in the 16-lap feature after the mishap.

Underground Wiring For New Street At Orono Hydro Meeting

At the Orono Hydro meeting on Monday night discussion covered extending service down Churchill Street with a plan to place hydro lines underground. R Forrester urged contacting the Orono Telephone Company to mirror a similar underground approach for new development. E Dent, the manager, said he would investigate and support exploring underground wiring if feasible. A motion approved that only net water heater rental charges will apply under the new provincial Sales Tax and the manager was authorized to proceed with water heater sales per utility practices.

Recreation Program Ends With Tin Can Derby

The Orono Park recreation program wrapped up the summer with a Tin Can Derby. Winners included Raye West and Shelley Mercer in the can race, David Mercer and Carol Mercer in bowling, Michael Carmen and Carol Mercer in slalom, and David Manning and Carol Mercer in the target event. Carol Mercer and Raye West were named Grand Champions for accumulating the most points. Participants then enjoyed a farewell party.

Orono Telephone Seeks Capital Increase and Board Expansion

A special general meeting of Orono Telephone Company Limited shareholders will consider proposals from the Board to increase directors from five to ten, authorize a capital rise from 11,900 to 211,900, issue 4,000 Series preference shares, and adopt a new General By-law. About 200 shares are held by Dunnville interests linked to a three-company bid to buy Orono Telephone.

Fort Hope Takes 2 1 Lead In Series At Port Hope

Port Hope won 2 to 1 on Orono’s home field to move ahead two games to one in the seven game Orono Port Hope CBA series. Dean West starred with two singles and a spectacular outfield catch while Beaton scored the lone Orono run. Bill Wakley earned the win. Keith West took the loss as Crono protested after seven innings. The game was called after seven innings though play was available for nine. The series resumes tonight at 5 30 in Orono Park with Orono aiming to tie.

Don Winslow Wins $1000 Scholarship for Ont Agr College

Donald A Winslow of Ida son of Clare Winslow 4 H member in Durham County has won an O A C Alumni Scholarship worth 1000 dollars for the first year of study at the Ontario Agricultural College. He led 4 H projects including six Millbrook Calf Club entries and placed highly in exams and student government. The scholarship honors outstanding future leaders in Ontario agriculture.

Guides To Benefit From Tea Served At Fair

A 3 percent ton Mobile Tea Wagon with three uniformed hostesses will visit Orono for the Fall Fair on September 8 and 9. The wagon, built for Salada Foods, serves 300 cups per hour and supports the Local Girl Guide Association. Hostesses wear blue uniforms and were chosen from 100 applicants. male servers proved less effective.

Newtonville Motor Crash Claims Carl Pandoff

A 31 year old Newtonville man, Carl Pandoff, was killed when a westbound car swerved and struck his parked motorcycle on highway 2. Witnesses said his friend Phil Gilmer jumped clear as Pandoff was hurled about fifty feet. The driver, Frederick F. Swaine of Lindsay, remained at the scene. Pandoff, employed by General Motors in Oshawa, leaves a sister Kathleen and brothers Peter and Alex. Nick preceded him in death.
