Peter McComb, leader of the Peterboro Little Theatre Group, brings two one act plays to Orono on Friday September 6. The troupe, winner of last year’s Orono Fair Drama Contest with The Worm Turns, promises amusement for all ages alongside humorous sketches.
Former Orone resident H. C. Rickaby, Ontario’s deputy minister of mines, earns praise for his hobby cultivating lilies. The article notes his Queen's Park duties and his enjoyment of gardening after work.
In cooperation with the Peterboro Theatre Group, Doug Lycett and Doug Gameby present humorous sketches during Theatre Night at Orono Town Hall on September 6. The programme starts at 8 15 p.m.
CHUC a new broadcast station owned by United Counties Broadcasting Company Limited begins on 1560 AM next week with 181 000 watts. Listeners from Port Hope to Belleville Cobourg to Snug Harbor Bowmansville Havelock Peterborough Lindsay Oshawa and beyond will receive sunrise to sunset programming as surveys show coverage across Northumberland Durham and areas north to Oshawa Belleville Peterborough and Lindsay.
Orono Police Trustees met in the Orono Hydro Office with full attendance. They reported new and completed year projects, discussed parking lines, speeding, by law updates, and a Transient Trader license fee set at $100. The board authorized drainage and curb reviews, planned floor refinishing, and approved higher fire insurance. Bills totaled over $1,880, leaving just over $4,000 in the bank, enabling a one time pension payment save.
The paper will not publish next week August 29 as the office closes from August 22 to September 3 for holidays.
The Orono PeeWees host Campbellville at Orono Park at 5 00 p m for the first best two of three Ontario playdown series. Local boys seek support in tonight’s opener with a chance to advance.
At 27 Douglas St L Oakville Mr Rickaby cultivates lilies from seed. it takes about three years to grow. He raises 35 varieties with several hundred blooms. flowering starts mid June and lasts to September with about 15 varieties blooming at peak. He spends many hours tending his garden.
The August meeting of the Wo mens Christian Temperance Union was held at the president Mrs H Walshs home. Devotional reading by Stella Carson used Psalm 24. Papers discussed peace and near beer. a bake sale was planned for September. a Oshawa invitation was noted. meeting closed with the Lord's prayer.
Mrs J W St John appears on the Orono High School faculty filling the late July vacancy created by Miss I Wautier who left to take a post in Europe. The new teacher holds a Western Ontario degree and brings French German English plus strong secretarial and business experience and will teach French Typewriting Office Practice Bookkeeping Library Science and Girls Physical Education.
The final Red Cross Swimming Tests were held at the Orone Pool on Tuesday afternoon with many young swimmers aiming for awards. Instructors Beth Wilbur Gail Cooper Joan Alldred Mary Ann Armstrong led a five week program, culminating in pass lists across categories including Juniors Intermediates and Seniors.
Orono Intermediates overcome Cobourg 9 to 2 in the Lakeshore playdowns with Robbie Robinson driving offense. Robinson had two singles and a triple in four at bats, scoring and driving in runs as Orono rallied from an early Cobourg lead. Winning pitcher Keith West allowed seven hits and six strikeouts over the full nine innings.
Hi-Teens announce a Hard Time Dance this Saturday at Odd Fellows Hall with a door prize and several dance prizes. A Best Dressed Hard Tiimest contest will reward the most worn outfit. admission is fifty cents for non-members and twenty five cents for members.
The Durham Central Fair at Orene invites cooks to compete in multiple culinary classes with prizes funded by various manufacturers. A class welcomes new exhibitors with no entry fee, and extra prize lists are available from the secretary's office.
Port Hope PeeWees push toward Foote Trophy after a three game series with Orono ending 7-4 10-10 and 5-3 in Orono. Wayne Kennedy pitched all nine for Orono with 17 strikeouts and 6 walks. Port Hope’s Hargan Fitzsimmons and Crono led at bats with Crono’s hits not enough to seal win. Orono awaits Ontario Baseball Association word on provincial playdowns likely starting against a North York team.
In Port Hope on Thursday evening Bob Frith delivered a three bagger driving in Terry Carleton to tie the game at 10 all in the seventh. Frith’s second hit of the contest came with Ralph Kennedy also contributing two hits. Tenry Carleton of Orono walked sixteen and fanned thirteen while Ian Campbell of Port Hope struck out eleven and yielded six walks.
