Orono Advances Over Newcastle in Semi Final Playdowns

Orono Baseball Team defeated Newcastle ten to two in the fifth game to claim the series and earn a shot at the top league title against Welcome or Cambourne. Raye West led with three singles, while K West pitched six strikeouts over five hits. Newcastle scored late in the game after four scoreless innings, with Foster and Knight among the inning’s highlights. Orono resumes play in the CBA D class as preparations begin for the next series.

Orono School Gets Modern Heating System

The Orono School replaces old heating with a new low pressure steam plant. Old coal burning furnaces and hot air vents are removed and replaced by compact steam radiators with individual room temperature control. Parker and Son of Bowmanville hold the tender. cost near $5,000 with most funded by the district.

Ontario eyes 60 mph limit on four lane highways

W M Nickle chairman of the Ontario legislature select committee on highway safety says he will urge approval of a 60 mile an hour limit for four lane highways including Queen Elizabeth Way Highway 400 and 401. He notes US turnpike data show higher speeds do not raise accidents and says flood lighting of railway crossings will also be recommended. The committee will study the Barrie highway and attend a Chicago traffic conference before reporting.

Mrs M J Tamblyn Wins at Oshawa Gladiolus Show

Lakefield Ontario reports Mrs Burt Graham of Buckhorn Lake died in Civic Hospital Peterborough after a short illness. Survived by husband daughter and granddaughter, plus three sisters. Funeral from Hendren Lakefield for burial in Lakefield cemetery. The 19th Annual Oshawa and District Gladiolus Society show in Bowmanville drew large crowds with many awards led by Frank Samis Bowmanville and Dr E W Sisson Bowmanville. About 1,000 blooms were shown and auctioned for proceeds.

Bowmanville Soldier Named to Indo China Truce Commission

Captain James E. Knox of Bowmanville, 32, Royal Canadian Regiment, is selected to serve with 70 officers on the Indo China truce commission. He will join Brigadiers W. J. Megill and T. E. Snow and other Canadian personnel, assembling at an undetermined location as external affairs and the army seek qualified supervisors for armistice work in Viet Nam Laos and Cambodia.
