Eleven Join Park Street Church at Orono Service

On Sunday April 11 at Park Street United Church eleven young people were received into church membership with Holy Communion. The service featured the minister Rev. S Littlewood and senior Session member H J Souch, including the presentation of The New Life booklet to new members Carol Staples and others.

Newcastle Hall Fire Damages Stage Pianos and Curtains

A Wednesday evening fire at Newcastle Community Hall was spotted by nine year old Keith Mellow who rang the alarm. Firefighters contained the blaze after about thirty minutes with the stage north end heavily damaged. A back stage overheated register is blamed for the incident damaging the stage two pianos and main curtains.

High Class Holsteins Sent From Ontario to Pennsylvania

A shipment of three carloads of purebred Holsteins was sent from Northumberland and Durham Counties to C. S. Erb and Co. in Middletown PA. H. K. Alwine praised the lot as the best in twelve years of Ontario buying. Cows averaged 325 dollars, heifers 215, and bulls 125 each. Durham breeders contributing include Bruce Tink Hampton Fred Austin Port Hope J D Brown and Cedar Dale Stock Farms Orono.

Hope Considering New Township School Area Formation

In spring 1942 sections 6 Zion and 9 Bunker Hill in South Hope sought inclusion in a Township School Area but no action followed. At S S No 5 Hope Morrish annual meeting a motion joined with neighboring sections. Last Thursday SIS No 4 Hope Welcome voted to enter Township School Area. consideration rests with the clerk. Hope may form a second Township School Area this year comprising four sections.

Fish Club Meeting Planned in Orono District

On Monday evening April 19 a meeting to form a Fish and Hunt Club will be held at the Kumrite Apartments in Orono and district at 8 p.m. Mr. Orville Wilson of Ontario Motor Sales Oshawa will present slides on fish. officers will be elected to organize trout plantings in Clarke Township streams.

Underground factories aid British war effort

W R Legge and C V Charters recount tours of British plants in wartime Britain. They describe a vast underground cavern factory with fluorescent lighting and modern ventilation, dormitories for workers, and large canteens. Women join the workforce in tens of thousands, with labor flexible and divisions simplified to withstand enemy disruption. They note Bevin seeks shorter hours, and report high average worker ages in Liverpool docks and building trades.

Chamber of Commerce Studies Hybrid Corn at Meeting

The Orone Chamber of Commerce discussed hybrid corn at a Monday meeting in Kumrite Apartments. They noted planting costs under $1 per acre, seed planting six to eight acres per bushel, land yield gains of two tons per acre, and borers resistance. Farmers may grow for ensilage or sell stocks for corn syrup and cob seed. secretary C. T. Miller seeks more information on stock maturity for syrup.

The Statistics Branch of Ontario Agriculture reports December 1 1942 farm totals. Durham County shows 10 438 sheep over one year and 4 007 lambs. total sheep and lambs 14 445. Swine total 36 641 with 7 126 over six months. Ontario total cattle 2 778 000. hogs 2 019 800. swine nationwide 7 750 600. Turkeys up to 6 804. geese down to 5 041. ducks 4 664. hens and chickens 274 042. Cows for milk decline. beef cows rise. calves up. yearling heifers up. Geese fall. turkeys and ducks rise slightly.

Kirby Community Dance Aids Red Cross Friday April 16

Kirby community hosts a Friday night dance at Orono Town Hall to raise funds for the Orono Red Cross. Russ Creighton and the dance artists perform. four prizes will be drawn including a pig or cash, a quilt, a hundredweight of flour, and a bushel of apples. Proceeds go to a good cause amid shortages.
