Georgetown Fall Fair set to open with horse events and exhibits

The 120th annual Fall Fair begins this weekend at Georgetown Park with Friday morning exhibit setup and Thursday entry check in after 4 pm. Saturday features harness racing, jumping horses, and livestock shows under judge Hank Snyder with prizes donated by local businesses. The event opens officially by Mrs. Lloyd Toppam of Woodstock, Ontario president of the ladies division of the Agricultural Societies Association. Georgetown Girls Pipe Band performs, and the exhibit hall showcases home baking flowers and vegetables. Admission is by small fee, with Paul Barber performing on the Baldwin organ Friday evening. Lions Club and bank staff help with gate receipts as the town updates facilities for the day. Ken Ella serves a third year as president with Mrs. George Ironside as secretary and RW Lawson as treasurer.

Georgetown YMCA YWCA reports record first year enrollment

The Georgetown Y and District YMCA YWCA celebrates a near maximum registration in its four year history. Programs reach peak attendance as volunteers and staff respond to demand. Judo, girls classes, teen clubs, Slimnastics and badminton grow. new coed and women classes planned.

Best Guesses Win Prizes At Trust Firm Opening

Three Georgetown residents served as judges in a goldfish bowl guessing contest at the Halton Peel Trust co opening on Mill Street beside the municipal parking lot. Winners received a silver dollar while visiting children got balloons. John Edgar greeted guests as Mrs Keith Dawson joined the senior staff to work at the Mackenzie Building site with plans for a St location in the former church building.

Civic Group Would Stir Town Election Interest

The Georgetown District Civic Group opened the fall season with a meeting at the Warren home. They aim to stimulate interest in civic affairs and study programs for the district, discussing methods to arouse civic participation in municipal elections and possible uses for Cedarvale School.

Hope Odour Conquered with New Spray and Windbreak

Councillors praised progress after a meeting with Domtar Mills resident manager Jack Crichton over lagoon odour. Deputy Reeve J Young said an aerator spray tested in Kingston is successful and the mill will plant over a hundred trees as a windbreak next spring to improve conditions.

Separate School Board discussed potential discontinuation of physical education in Holy Cross Church Hall but voted to continue. Principal Fitzmaurice urged organized sport. Roland Lobb to draft the program per Education Department rules. Cedarvale hosts Grade One in a former classroom, bus routes updated, bilingual kindergarten in church basement. English enrollment has declined while bilingual enrollment rose from 147 in 1963 to 180 by September 1966.

Georgetown Town Council Briefs on Park pond and staffing

The council backed Georgetown's resolution urging a cement-like bottom for Terra Cotta Conservation Area pond, and recommended involving Credit Valley Conservation Authority. Georgetown District High School received park use days for home rugby and soccer due to building work. Leonard Glass was hired as provisional police constable. Peer Stevenson will face flat water billing for several months. The town foreman was authorized to hire a washroom attendant for Fall Fair day at twelve dollars.

Kin Loyalty Rewards at Kin Club Attendance Awards

Seven years of perfect attendance earned Kin Loyalty awards at a Kin Club meeting held September 17 in Stan's Restaurant banquet room. President Tom Kent announced honors for Dean Taylor and other members including Ken Milne Harry Levy Trey Moores Bob Collett Murphy Bill Sunpucks Fred Harrison Glen Wright Herb Wilson Doug Ditchfield Al Mahaffy and Ron Roberts. Roberts was elected secretary succeeding Del D Entre mont who resigned. A past members night is planned for October 3 with invites to former Kin members.

Clean Up Yards New By Law Demand

A by law requiring cleaning of yards and vacant lots passed three readings. It obliges owners or tenants to clear up yards to avoid prosecution. The town may perform cleanup at the owner's expense after a 30 day notice. An outdoor HOPE centre display at Hornby showcases craftwork by adults with disabilities.

Nurses and county reps plan Friday talks on health dispute

Brighter prospects for Halton County Public Health Nurses contract talks followed a Friday night session with the warden's special committee. Deputy Reeve Charles Menery chaired in the warden's absence as nurses called the meeting a fact finding step and praised the cooperative tone. A further meeting is planned as the county seeks replacements for resignations.
