The Georgetown business community debates the future of the Future of Business Men's Association after dwindling meetings. Attendees urge full support from all local merchants and plan a supper to revive interest and gather suggestions for promoting local commerce and a friendlier business climate.
When schools reopen on September sixth a ten month year with one hundred ninety six teaching days begins and runs until June 29 1939. The calendar lists seven holidays including Thanksgiving Day Remembrance Day Christmas vacation Easter and various year end breaks.
A notice urges households to inspect and clean chimneys and stove pipes before cold weather. Replace any damaged parts to reduce fire risk and help firemen sleep easier during fall and winter winds.
Mrs Gordon McKinney of 395 Willard avenue died instantly when her car collided head on with a half ton truck on Highway 17, 24 miles east of Sault Ste. Marie. Her husband suffered facial and head injuries and was hospitalized. An inquest was ordered by Coroner Dr W V Grigg. Bruce Mines. The truck driver was Walter Beilhartz of Bruce Station. Mr McKinney works for the Dominion Government Department of Insurance and is brother of Alex McKinney, Brampton Fair president. The couple were en route to visit relatives in Brampton amid foggy conditions.
The Lions Club pledges service to Georgetown and nearby areas to support dental and other clinics for underprivileged children. On October 10 and 11 a community frolic and arena show offer two nights of entertainment with vaudeville acts and games, free admission, and a cash prize drawing of 2080 dollars.
AcceTe Montes presents The Rage of Paris a Universal romantic comedy at the Gregory Theatre Georgetown on Saturday Oct 1 with afternoon matinee and night shows. French star Darrieux co stars with Fairbanks Jr Mischa Auer supports Charlies Coleman Samuel S Hinds Nella Walker and Harry De with direction by the fist taro and Buddy De Sylva as producer.
A reader notes a region with 240 971 non citizens and a land area 397 miles long by 175 miles wide, about one tenth the size of Ontario. The chief city Praue holds 800 000 people, challenging Germany with a population of 70 000 000 and prompting questions of courage and belief in international reception.
On Sunday evening around seven Mrs Joseph Ruddy was killed after being struck on Guelph Street near the High School. Reid Marquess of Guelph drove the car. Chief of Police W G Marshall investigated and released him. An inquest ordered by Chief Coroner Dr J H Stead will be held at Georgetown Town Hall Friday at 8 pm.
The George town Lions Club sponsors a sacred thanksgiving service in the Arena on Sunday Oct 9 at 8 15 p m after church services. Rev George W Tebbs of Burlington will be guest speaker with local ministers. Toronto Police Quartette Georgetown Choral Society and the Lorne Scots Band perform. Citizens are invited.
A Gladstone Athletic Club meet entertained Georgetown on Saturday with an 18 mile marathon to Ashgrove and back ending at the Acton crossroad park. F Bristow won in 1 hr 55 min 30 sec from scratch. other finishers include R Stewart 2 hr 10 min, Jim Cummings 2 hr 2 min 30 sec, O Garbutt 2 hr 3 min, O Beaumont 2 hr 4 min 10 sec, Jim Potter 2 hr 6 min 15 sec, John 2 hr 6 min 30 sec. A 3 mile race was won by R Martin in 15 min 30 sec with 45 sec handicap. J Swingler 15 min 57 sec. R Wheeler 16 min 11 sec. Jimmy Emmerson, Beiertone entry, covered 15 of 18 miles. The club hopes to host Toronto visitors again.
Acton Junior Hockey Club held its annual meeting last week and elected officers for 1938. Honorary Presidents include E. B. Force Amos Mason G. A. Dills H. B. Holmes and J. M. McDonald. Acton will enter their junior team in the OFA again this season.
A Georgetown native marks a significant birthday while his family notes a long public service history. The individual helped build the Pease Foundry at Brampton and previously served 24 years on the Brampton school board after a stint on the Brampton council. His son E. W. McCulloch is a former mayor, with two other sons Frank and Bert living in Brampton.
The Georgetown Lawn Bowling Club hosted a combined event where the gentlemen and ladies enjoyed eight rinks of competition eight prizes were awarded to Mrs McKenzie Mrs Kaiser and Miss Lyla Kennedy. A festive spread followed with decorations a radio and thanks from both presidents.
Joseph Gardiner of Bpeyside was struck by a car on the 2nd Line Esquesing near his home. He died in Guelph Hospital on September 21 after a fractured skull left him unconscious. Funeral from Rumley’s Parlours to Fairview Cemetery, Acton, held Friday. an inquest will be held.
The United Church Young People's Union held its weekly meeting Monday with President Armand Swackhamer presiding. Guests Arthur Dayfoot and Wm Maclaren spoke on their recent experiences in Northern Ontario and Bermuda, followed by a thanks from attendees.
A large Monday crowd signals active season ahead as Norval Rifle Club plans a four week novelty shoot starting next Monday. Events include ten offhand shots, ten prone in one minute and fifteen seconds, and ten prone deliberate shots. Top scores on Monday: Atkinson 100, Meredith 99, Wilson 98, Nurse 99, McKinney 98, Hall 97, Hustler 107, Lisk 97, Stevenson 97, Cantelon 93, Stark 93. Thanksgiving Day shoot advertised on page 7.

A Georgetown town council special meeting chaired by Mayor Joseph Gibbons reviewed a proposed sewage system by engineers Hagey Gray and Plunkett. The project totals about 127000 dollars with 69 mills via frontage tax and 1.69 mills via general tax, pending ratepayer vote.

Molly, the Erin horse famous for appearing in the Ontario filmed movie King’s Plate, died Friday after three years of glory. She was owned by Trueman Beer and selected from Erin township for on location film work.
