A Georgetown meeting at the Municipal Building brought together returned servicemen and citizens to address urgent housing. Officials noted material and labor shortages delay government schemes and urged all returning men to register needs to gauge demand for temporary shelter before 1946.
Acton Juveniles beat Georgetown Pirates 14 to 12 in a close OB A game. Allen started for Acton before Pryor moved to center field, with Spence and Herrington handling key pitching duties. Pirates hitters King Muir Norton and Hoare each had two hits, while Spence and Herrington combined on the mound for Georgetown as the two teams split their weekend series.
The Girls' Pipe Band staged a gala Musical Carnival in the Arena last Friday with guests the Acton Boys' Band led by Charles Mason. Master of ceremonies was Dave Robertson of Toronto. comedian Jimmy Fax, aged 91, performed along with Sam Gisby and Lieut. Russell Firestine. Dolores Herring ton danced, Sgt. Mary Cummins and Cpl. Grace Beerman did a sword dance, and Doris Hulls' Orchestra provided music in the Rose Room. Door prize winner ticket 113 claimed for a ton of coal. funds will support band transportation for out of town engagements.
Voters will use the 1344 revised list since the 1945 lists will be ready after the Assessment Roll. Those who bought property in 1945 will not appear. Only individuals listed as OWNERS on the 1944 list are entitled to vote.
Joan Claudia Cudden daughter of Horace Cudden and the late Mrs Cudden Georgetown wed Arthur Ford of Acton son of George Ford and the late Mrs Ford after his four years overseas. Bride wore white satin lace bouquet of red roses. Attendant Miss Madeline Sanford Toronto in pink net over taffeta with pink roses. Groomsman James Ford Milton and Rev R C Todd officiated. During register signing Lyndsa Stewart played I Love You Truly. Reception in church basement followed by honeymoon departure.
A postponed Kmor and Limehouse Presbyterian Churches picnic at Stanley Park Brin Saturday featured slides and rides for children. Race results listed multiple age groups and open categories. David Dobie pitched his team to a 14 7 victory. sandwich supper served by the ladies of both congregations.
QMS William King, who enlisted in October 1940 and served in North Africa and with the Ordnance Corps in France Holland Belgium and Germany, has returned home to Acton to reunite with his wife Clarice Mor tor King and daughters Gail and Betty. His brother K W King is in Holland and a brother in law Harry Malone served in the air force. Prior to enlistment King worked with William Schenk.
Leading Seaman Frank Cleave visits his mother Mrs Isobel Cleave at their Rome Gh Midtab St home on leave pending discharge. He joined the navy in May and trained as a radio technician at the University of Toronto. He served on Weyburn, sunk in the Mediterranean in February 1944, later on Montreal and Truro in anti submarine work. His brother Walker Cleave is in the army at Barriefield.
Bob Goldham, star rookie of the Toronto Maple Leafs and 1942 Stanley Cup winner, is on 55 day leave before discharge from the navy. He will begin pre season training at Owen Sound next month after joining the navy in July 1942. The son of Mr and Mrs Harry Goldham, he has been a physics instructor in Cornwall Nova Scotia and is eager to resume maple leaf duties this winter.
Lt Cpl Clarence Winfield of Glen Williams was among district men who returned last Saturday after crossing from England on the Pasteur. He enlisted July 1, 1940 and went overseas in June 1941 with the 1st Armoured Brigade RCASC, taking part in the invasions of Sicily and Italy.
The family learned last week that Flight Sergeant Lawrence Herbert Beaumont is officially presumed dead after being reported missing in action over Germany on February 3. Born in Glen Williams he enlisted at 17 while a Georgetown High School student and trained in several Canadian locations before going overseas. He is survived by his parents William and the late Mrs Beaumont and three sisters and two brothers.
William Arnold president and production manager of the Storey Glove Company in Acton died suddenly from a stroke at his home on Saturday September 15 in his 64th year. He was born in Glen Williams and moved to Acton with his family. he had lived in Georgetown and returned to Acton thirty years ago. He served on Acton Council for several years and is survived by his wife Eleanor A. Langan and three brothers and two sisters. Funeral services were held Tuesday at his home with Rev. Forbes Thomson officiating and burial in Fairview Cemetery Acton. Pallbearers included Frank McIntosh Neil McNabb Herbert Ritchie R. Speilvogel E Marso and Gordon Currie.
Six year old Marion Kirkwood disappeared while playing and was seen entering a maroon car with a man. Her worried parents Donald and (Mrs) Kirkwood of Erin Village feared kidnapping. About an hour later a passing motorist found her near the town line at Highway 27 and brought her home. It is thought the man who picked her up was intoxicated. Marion is granddaughter of Mr and Mrs William Kirkwood of Georgetown Main Street.
A Stratford Fall Fair winner is T J Brownridge of R R 2 Georgetown who took 14 prizes on ten entries in the swine class including Senior and Grand Champion sow. A photo showed his prize sow and five day old litter of eight piglets in Wednesdays Stratford Beacon Herald. Brownridge also shows swine cattle and vegetables and serves as a director of the Exquising Agricultural Society.
Pte Robert Connely, six years overseas with Hamilton Light Infantry, returns to Canada and plans to settle in Toronto. he served in Dieppe and on the Continent, was wounded in Holland, and is now reuniting with family in Oakville. Sgt Clifton W Moreton, five years in World War I and six years in the current conflict, returns to Norval with wife and son. twins Jack and Pat Moreton serve with the Desert Rats in Germany. Welcome home reception held with relatives from Brampton and Georgetown, gifts, dancing, and a buffet.
The Countess of Strathmore Chapter ILODE held its first Fall meeting in Legion Hall with Mrs. Wallace Thompson presiding in the Regent’s absence. Guest speaker Stanley of the Canadian National Institute spoke on blind veterans and rehabilitation, thanking I C D E for tag day in Georgetown. Two new members joined, Miss Ann Hickey appointed War Services Convenor, summer reports noted dresses and comfort bags sent to British children and civilians, $50 netted from an oil painting draw, October bridge party planned, and thanks read from the Adopted Minesweeper crew.
Sunday School services featured the Junior Choir Beginners and Primary Class and the Sunday School orchestra. Guest speaker Charles B Seager advertising manager of the Right House Hamilton known as The Man Who makes the Chalk Talk. In the evening Charles Willson and Jack Armstrong played a cornet duet.
In Georgetown a public meeting in the Municipal Building set plans for a local clothing drive to support a national relief collection. Ralph Ross named chairman with Mrs. Harold Cleave as vice chair. committee includes Ven. W. G. O. Thompson, Rev. C. Cochrane, Mrs. R. T. Paul and Mrs. S. Groat. The drive runs October 1 and asks residents to donate washed and sanitary winter and summer clothing for all ages plus blankets and footwear. Further notes will follow in the Herald.
Mrs Campbell and Mrs Crawshaw visited Mrs R Lane while Mrs Herbert Orr Miss Lois Orr and Mr Van Zant of Manitoulin Island called on the Merediths and Nobles. A hospital update and a Sunday School picnic feature community life with films, bazaars, and a successful bake sale at Mrs Harvey Norton’s.
Dr and Mrs A McAllister attended the Ontario Medical Association District No 5 meeting in Brampton last Wednesday. Martha E Isley RN of Guelph visits her parents before joining Leamington Rotary Hospital staff. Mrs Hawkins and daughter Helen of Markdale visited Acton over the weekend with local families. Mrs Thompson recuperating from scald injury. Norman Wright and Elizabeth Brownson of Chicago visiting Acton area. Jean Mackensie discharged from RCAF plans West Coast trip. C D Nevill of Victoria BC guests at Rectory. Mrs Leslie and Elizabeth Leslie visiting Colorado Springs. Lawrence James Prucyk christened at St Joseph Acton. Rev Fr W J Morgan officiant. godparents Miss F Eleanor Treanor and Mr Neil Gibbons.
The Businessmen earned their first win of the semi finals by defeating Huttonville 5-3 on Sept 22. Jack Kemshead pitched well for Huttonville but costly errors by the defense hurt them. Steve Halpin led the victors with three hits in four at bats. The teams meet again Sept 30 in the final semi final game to determine who faces Smith Stone in a 3 out of 5 District Championship.
About 60 members of the 80th Reserve Cay Veterans' Guard of Canada based in Toronto arrived in Georgetown on Saturday afternoon. They camped at the armouries and led a march past on Main Street at 8 45 pm with officials including Lt Col B S Cousens Mayor Harold Cleave and Reeve K R MacDonald taking the salute. A city picket guarded the corners as the mayor welcomed the visitors before maneuvers in the Stewarttown area and the unit departed Sunday afternoon.
