Georgetown council approves plans for a new Yard school in the Delrex subdivision near old town limits to meet eight additional classrooms by next September. A campaign to raise 40,000 for a public swimming pool behind the arena begins September 28 with pledges from industry and unions.
St John s United Young Peoples Union elected Bill Whitney president Jan Hansen vice president and Gail King secretary treasurer at a Monday church hall meeting Four group leaders were chosen with topics stewardship training citizenship and community service faith and evangelism and missions and world outreach The YPU invites all youths 15 and older and form two high school up to meetings every Monday at 8 pm
A Sunday morning crash at Emmie's Radio on Mall Street shattered the show window and damaged merchandise after John A Ritchie grabbed a milk bottle while drying up the post office. Damages totaled 500 to the window and 2725 to the car. A second crash on Mill Street involved Matthew McDonough and Isabel Harris with 525 total damages as Constable Clifford Found investigated.
Mrs. George A. Robinson of 22 Guelph Street traveled to Fredericton New Brunswick to be with her seriously ill husband. He died before her arrival from a second stroke. Mr. Robinson had gone to attend their daughter Thais wedding and was buried at Stickney Carlton County the following Saturday afternoon.
Council wrestles with a confusing building by law clause governing setbacks on corner lots. Mayor Armstrong urges a simple fix to allow 10 feet from either street, while Dr Doug Sargent and others push for formal inspections and tighter enforcement. A later note mentions United Suburban Gas seeking a local franchise.
Enrolment in two Georgetown public schools totals 878 this year with 100 more pupils since June. Chapel Street school has 13 teachers serving 358 pupils and Wrigglesworth School has 12 teachers for 420 pupils. Betty Jene Clarke, daughter of Mr and Mrs Harvey Clarke, married Carl Henry Ingebertson of Brampton at Grace United Church Brampton at 2 30 Saturday afternoon September 10. The ceremony featured multicolored gladioli arrangements.
The Georgetown community night school committee met at the Barber home and elected officers. Classes open to all, with courses in sewing, millinery, carpentry and more, start Tuesday evening November 1 in public and high schools. Details and fees to follow in next week’s Herald. Applicants urged to register early as forms are processed in order received.
Miss Therese St Jean, director, worries about a poor harvest as unseasonably hot weather makes apples drop. Farm boys struggle to pick up windfalls and raise revenue for the school. volunteers in town who can spare a few hours would greatly aid the effort.
Mrs. Douglas Wilson of Shelley Sr. attended the funeral in Montreal for her grandfather Fred Hinks aged 92 who died after a stroke last weekend. The service was held with family and friends in attendance.
Delrex Head and Rex Heslop will officially open the 100th Georgetown Fall Fair at 2 pm on October 1st. Heslop, promoter of the Delrex subdivision, will participate in opening ceremonies before the grandstand. The Heslops plan to move into a new home on the former W. T. Craig Herd farm, with daughter Marilyn attending Georgetown High School and son Rex at Wrightsworth School.
A fund campaign for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind will be canvassed in town and district the week of September 26. Dick Licata and Jim Jones organize with Lions Club, while Mrs Percy Leslie and Mrs J F Gillis represent the LODE on the county advisory board. LODE ladies will staff a Blindcraft booth at Georgetown Fair October 1 where articles made by blind people are on display and for sale.
Oliver Mowat Moore 77 retired general manager of Canada Building Materials Toronto dies of a heart attack. Born in the Scotch Block son of William and Catherine Moore he led Ontario Curling Association as president and was a Rotarian and church member. He died at his home and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery leaving two children Mrs C P Paton and Keith.
Local meeting lays groundwork for Georgetown Junior C hockey in OHA with George South to lead as president. Fundraising centers on raffling a 1955 Plymouth Savoy from Bowers Motor Sales. tickets go on sale this weekend, raffle at January home game. Also notes Rev. Alex Calder funeral at McClure Funeral Home and a parade date on Fair Day October 1.
A new furniture company Hi-Lite Furniture Co. Ltd. locates in Georgetown purchasing part of the old Provincial Paper lower mill from Wm. B. Ackerman. Eugene Schwartz president and Howard co secretary-treasurer lead the venture to manufacture wood and plastic furniture with operations slated in two to three weeks.
