Georgetown council members debated a two year term for future council members with a preliminary majority in favor. Dr. Smith and Dr. Speight argued a two year tenure allows better governance while opponents feared pushing the question without a plebiscite. Deputy Reeve Young and several councillors urged voter input and noted past ballots showed mixed support.
Georgetown residents will vote in December on a waterworks commission to serve the town. A by-law authorizing the question vote was approved at Monday's council meeting for December 5. Separate question asks whether to return to general council elections or keep the ward system adopted in 1961 after 1960's general vote showed ward support.
Dr Ern Hyde spoke on a motion urging Provincial and Domtar to pay 50 percent toward a sewer surcharge once the sewage disposal plant handles mill waste. Mills had paid a Jesser charge based on water use. now negotiations seek higher rates and a town bond to cover plant disruption. Mayor Gibbons said negotiations continue and an Ontario Water Resources Commission advisory suggests the town should receive more than the 50 percent baseline.
The Registered Nurses Association of Ontario will support ex public health nurses from Halton and United Counties Health Units with fifty dollars weekly per nurse. The move was approved by RNAC executives last Saturday, with telegram campaigns to key officials and publicity planned to back a dispute resolution. Twenty four of twenty six Halton County nurses resigned September 12 to press recognition of their association as a bargaining unit.
The mayor noted discrimination claims against households as some industries pay less than 50 percent. Only Reeve Hunter and Co Harrison backed the Hyde motion, prompting the mayor to propose a special meeting with papermill officials to reexamine the issue.
Esquesing council passed a by law requiring ten acre lots in the township to have a minimum 570 foot frontage on established roads to curb long narrow parcels. The session also approved annual grants totaling 635 to local fairs and associations, and discussed street closures and lights as well as a tax dispute involving Mrs Marjorie Powys over Hydro arrears and a potential seizure.
A crash at the corner of Joseph and Charles Streets on October 11 caused over $1,000 in damage and left 12 year old Brian Brown of Downsview with a facial injury. Barry W. Brown of Downsview and William Geggie of Glen Williams were involved when Geggie’s car pulled out of Joseph Street and was struck on Charles Street, ending on a front lawn at 23 Charles Street. Geggie's 1958 Chevrolet was a total loss and Brown’s 1966 Ford sustained $500 in damage. A second collision later the same day involved a 1964 Buick driven by William Edwin Wilson of Edith Street and a 1966 Dodge driven by Bernadie Mackenzie of Stevens Crescent, with $1,900 damage and neck injuries to Mackenzie. Another minor incident occurred when a car skidded on wet leaves and collided with two parked cars. Marion Gordon of Acton reported a 1965 Ambassador involved, with $275 in property damage to a 1963 Chevrolet owned by Herbert Bell.
Between 100 and 125 business places and schools were inspected for fire hazards here Wednesday. Officials conducted checks across businesses and educational facilities, aiming to improve safety standards and identify required corrections.
Police officers from George town Milton Acton Burlington and Oakville are among 25 enlistees for a six week Milton headquarters Emergency Measures Organization radio telephone course. The course starts Thursday with the theme communications and will be taught by Norman Harris and Bruce Collison.
Police investigate a burglary at G S Television in Market Centre where thieves broke a window and a door between 3 40 am and 9 am lastThursday. The haul included six portable and six floor model television sets and cash totaling 4635. The incident is under active inquiry.
About eighty nurses supported by spouses and friends voiced the Halton Health Unit dispute at the County Council chamber. The session failed to produce a meeting or new proposals, as the Special Committee's report on rehiring and prior consideration drew opposition and calls for negotiation.
Arena heaters installed at Georgetown Memorial Arena will debut Sunday in an exhibition game featuring Georgetown Raiders and Went on Dukes. Arena manager Donald Gosling announced the suspended electric heating units are now in place and ready for use.
