Local students organized a Roman style chariot race yielding 1132.60 for the Rehabilitation Foundation. Norm Ferguson won with Doug Hills and Bill Dwyer driving the winning team. judges disqualified the school staff entry amid uns proven suspicions.
Eighteen Halton County residents including a senior education official and a Grade 8 student were named to study the role of religious instruction in public schools. The panel, formed after opposition to compulsory religion grew, will report to the board next month with further updates planned for January and March.
Two Guelph men were injured late Thursday night on Highway 7 east of Georgetown. Albert Zinger required facial cuts at Georgetown Hospital after the car veered off the road hitting a ditch. Passenger Donald Carter suffered cuts to his face and left arm. Vehicle damage listed at 500 dollars. Constable Pearson of North Halton OPP investigated at 11:45 p.m. A separate Friday collision near Baseline involved a car driven by Maurice Emond of Oakville and a school bus driven by Leslie Lafferty of Mississauga, causing 1500 and 300 dollars in damage respectively. No injuries reported.
Georgetown Jaycettes hosted two service clubs the Kinettes and Rotary Annes at a dinner meeting at North Halton Golf and Country Club on Wednesday October 8. Councillor Donna Denison spoke as the featured woman speaker on recreation stressing coordination and planning for better programs.
The North Halton OPP issues a warning about wet autumn leaves posing slick conditions on roadways. Drivers are urged to exercise caution as leaves can reduce traction and increase crash risk during wet weather.
Georgetown Fire Flies, local branch of the Canadian Family Camping Federation, held an odds and ends auction at Cedarvale Tuesday night raising S21 for club coffers. President Ted Hewitt acted as auctioneer, with items donated by members. John Booth projected three films on Toronto traffic, Kingston-Ottawa area, and northern Ontario sights. Guests included CFCF officers Mr. and Mrs. W. Holden. Next gathering: October 25 at Georgetown Bowl for a family bowling party.
Fire Chief Jack Cunningham reported all town schools completed annual drills under fire department supervision with orderly evacuations. Inspections covered boilers stairwells panic bars trash removal and extinguishers as part of Fire Prevention Week. Church parade in Oakville featured Halton County firemen including six Georgetown reps.
Halton education officials say actual student enrolment in county schools is 1,240 below projections, creating a teacher surplus of more than 20 contracted staff. The shortfall shifts these teachers into supply roles, while the capital budget will shrink by at least 500,000 next year with further cuts pending.
Twenty eight people have died on Halton County roads so far this year with five fatalities in the past two weeks. The Milton area accounts for the most recent deaths while North Halton detachment area reports nine highway deaths. Burlington, Oakville, Acton and Georgetown have seen multiple incidents though Georgetown and Milton proper report no fatalities this year.
A Georgetown police cruiser driven by Constable Paul Rogerson sustained five hundred dollars in damage and a 1969 Chevrolet owned by Ron McAllister of 107 Moore Park Crescent received the same level of damage. The crash occurred just after midnight near Church Street as the cruiser was turning around. Sgt Rod Donaldson investigated.
St Johns United Church A T OS Men s Club met last Tuesday night for its monthly dinner. Presiding was President Jack Layman with devotional by Ernie Forgrave. They plan to decorate the church for Thanksgiving and take Laymen s Sunday service on October 19. An annual Christmas tree project was discussed and canvassing orders issued. The club will supply a record player for Sunday school and arrange a children s treat after Christmas. Alex Berzinsh closed with Greek travel slides.
A fourteen year old girl, Theresa Thompson, was struck by a truck on Guelph Street opposite Georgetown High School. She suffered a broken hip and pelvis and multiple leg cuts. Doctors say recovery will take at least three months at Sick Children’s Hospital in Toronto after transfer from Georgetown Hospital. The Georgetown Ambulance Corps transported her to Toronto.
