J B C Watkins Dies in Montreal Diplomat
J B C Watkins longtime Canadian diplomat died suddenly in Montreal at the Holiday Inn restaurants dinner. He served as ambassador to Norway Russia Denmark and Iceland and spent years in Moscow as charge d affaires. Born at Norval Station he studied at University of Toronto and taught at Manitoba prior to joining External Affairs in 1946. He retired after a heart condition. Funeral at Norval Presbyterian Church with cremation follows at Harold McClure Funeral Home in Varna.

The 31 day long UAW strike against Gene 1 Motors has hit Georgetown with 7 layoffs at Pressure 2 Division of Interchemical Limited on Armstrong Ave. The plant, GM’s top customer, trimmed staff by half after two weeks without a settlement. The Georgetown plant supplies body sealing compounds and enamel materials for GM components.
