Record 71 Grade 13ers Start Careers Continue Toward Higher Education

A record 71 Georgetown- District High School Grade 13 graduates will receive diplomas this fall with many pursuing higher education. Forty-two are enrolled in universities including University of Waterloo leading with 12 and University of Toronto with seven. Others attend Teachers’ College, Ryerson, nursing schools, and various Ontario universities. Names and destinations of several graduates are listed, showing pathways to university, college, and professional programs.

Parking Meters Grow as City Funds for Parking Authority

The city collects about 100 dollars weekly from 75 meters run by the Parking Authority. The money does not go to general revenue but to the Parking Authority for land, lots, or other uses. Thirty new meters are arriving for Main Street North and South and Park and Church Streets. Some meters are installed but not yet in use until the by law is passed. Completed meters have had their mechanisms removed to prevent coin loss.

Trustees Object To Parks Board Skating Proposal

A letter from the Parks Board proposing to end Saturday afternoon public skating and move sessions into school hours drew sharp objections from the Public School Board. Trustees G Sigurdson and Chris Walker argued against canceling public skating, noting transportation and PE period conflicts. The board agreed to send a letter to the Arena Board supporting keeping Saturday skating free, while granting travel and conference permissions for staff and observers.

Reverend Bruce Woods Leaves Maple Ave for Vancouver Church

Rev. Bruce A. Woods, longtime Maple Ave Baptist pastor, resigns to join Rathmorton Baptist Church in Vancouver, BC. He will depart Georgetown at month end and begin duties November 6, with the church planning to press ahead with its building program under a new pastor.

Nurses and Husbands March On County Council

Halton County Health Unit nurses and supporters plan to march on the October 18 council session to push for collective bargaining. Led by Flora Hesson they seek to certify local and United Counties public health nurses as a bargaining unit without Labour Board action. A protest meeting is set for October 15 at RNAC in Toronto with representatives from 11 public health and four hospital associations invited.

Rashomon at High School prompts bruises during rehearsals

The well known Japanese play Rashomon is set for October 19 20 and 21 in the High School auditorium. Actors report scenes of sword fighting between The Bandit and The Husband have become too realistic causing cuts and bruises. Vera Macdonald plays the wife and Chris Fisher the Woodcutter with other cast members in supporting roles. The production is directed by Lynne Hyde who also handles set design while Pat Barkhouse serves as producer.

Move to establish two year term for council seats

A long debated plan to set a two year term for elected officials near certain to take effect this election. On a tight five to four vote, a by law to allow December elected councilors to serve two years was approved, with three readings due before November 1. Supporters Dr Smith Speight Ballentine Deputy Reeve Young Steve Hunter argued it allows long term planning and reduces costly yearly elections, while Mayor Gibbons Emmerson and Hyde urged a public plebiscite prior to any change.

Raiders Bump Into Mills First Two Junior Games

Georgetown Raiders of the Suburban Junior C League arrange an exhibition Sunday October 23 at Georgetown Memorial Arena West on Dukes before opening league play. They travel Friday October 28 to Milton Merchants and host October 30 in Georgetown. Team has practiced thrice weekly and seeks strong tryouts among hopefuls.

Abandoned House Burns on Bequesing Farm

A fire yesterday morning destroyed an abandoned house on Stan Waters farm on the 6th Line of Bequesing. The structure had not been used for 10 years and was discovered at 3 am by police. Fears persisted that wind-blown sparks could spread to adjoining woods.
