Readings at Pub Library capped a quiet Georgetown nomination night with little debate. Mayor Gibbons and council members outlined finances relief costs and projects while nominating a full slate for 1939 including Gibbons Davis Lyons Costigan and others with pledges to economical governance and town improvements.
The Ontario Department of Labor names A. Maclaren as Farm Placement Director. Interested youths and farmers should write to Parliament Buildings Toronto. Boys are placed for one trial month with farmer paid, then potential one year with wages at prevailing rate.
The municipality honors Public School Trustee Sam Harrison for sixteen years of service. As chairman of the Property Committee his diligent work kept the school in good repair. Annie Ryan, longtime teacher and principal, will succeed him this year.
The Esquesing Agricultural Society held a dance in the Arena last night with Olde Tyme and Modern five piece orchestra. Bert Gardhouse of Weston served as floor manager and a lunch was served. The Society intends to make this an annual affair with committee members Walter Gray James Fisher Craig Reid and John Bird Jr.
The funeral of William Gordon Milne Browne of Simcoe took place in Norval and Markham with a large escort. Browne, 47, died after a year of illness at Guelph General Hospital. A former RAF instructor, he built a Norval mill, organized a hockey club, funded an outdoor rink, led the Norval Rifle Club, and belonged to St Paul's Church Halton Masons Legion. Survived by widow Barbar ahem and children Gordon Joan Douglas, plus siblings.
The Halton Livestock Improvement Association holds its annual meeting in Milton this Saturday with J C Steckley director of the Ridgetown Experimental Station as chief speaker. Elgin Senn of the Dominion Livestock Branch will discuss hog marketing. the event is open to all and expected to draw a large crowd.
Ottawa reports Canada weighs a difficult refugee issue amid global sympathy for German Jewish refugees. Cabinet debates balance between immigration rules and humanitarian duty, noting unemployment pressures and the need for international cooperation. A decision on policy is expected after allies act. J Kenshead and N H Brown attended a Toronto meeting at the King Edward Hotel with bakers from Ontario and the Minister of Labor. The gathering urged blocking large mill owned bakeries from incorporating towns tax free to keep money for local churches schools and streets. They argued city trucks drive up bread costs and back wages. Action by the provincial government is anticipated.
High scores in the third tournament series were posted by D. Wallace and J. Mills with E. Hoare and C. Sinclair second. The standings show Wallace and Mills leading with 275, followed by Spires and Benham, Roney and Gilmer, Prust and Chapman. About 15 members indicated they would attend Monday’s progressive play.
Mayor Joseph Gibbons was elected by acclamation for 1939 at a ratepayers meeting, with Harold Cleave failing to qualify. This marks Gibbons sixth term as mayor. Acclaimed councilors and trustees were named for wards and boards, with Ward II still awaiting a fill due to only one candidate qualifying for Ward III.
A late night fire swept through Alton destroying Wilsons grocery and Dorringan hardware along with the Orange Hall. Two brothers Gordon and Douglas Wilson escaped by leaping from their apartment window. Affected buildings include a grocery, hardware, private residence and the Orange Hall with minor damage to a nearby barber shop. Damages are estimated at 15000 dollars. The blaze was halted by local fire brigades around 1 30 Tuesday morning.
Dr. G S H Barton lauds Boys and Girls Farm Club Work as Canada’s growing agricultural force. More than 37 000 members nationwide have boosted fairs and production in grain livestock and hogs. Awards were presented by Sir William Mullock, 85, to winning teams and clubs receive praise for community impact.
Caledon Council was returned to office for 1939 with one new nomination outside the retiring body. Sam Kannawin, reeve in 1937, retired in favor of the present reeve Albert D. McBride. Other council members include Deputy Reeve Alex. B. McLeish and Councillors Norman Story W. J. Trathern and W. Hawkins.
Acton opened a Three Months Short Course in Agriculture and Home-Economics with about 60 young people attending. J A Berry and H V Binkley led agriculture lectures in Knox Sunday school room while David Smith and colleagues taught music and recreation. visitors will tour Griffin & Son stock farm and itinerant lecturer T C Adams will discuss cream grading.
