Georgetown council approved drafting by laws to dissolve the Centre Yoad swimming and the Cedarvale Centre boards and create a seven member municipal recreation committee. Supporters say the change will coordinate recreation, cut administration from 28 to seven, and allow more grants, while opponents warn of lost volunteer work and higher costs.
Colin Blight of 250 Delrex appeared before council Monday night to challenge the 50 percent sewer service surcharge on water not entering the sanitary sewer. He argued residential users should have equal access to adjustments as industrial and commercial users, offering to meter hose water at his expense. Council members noted the difficulty in measuring such water and that removing the charge could raise the mill rate. officials defended the surcharge as fair though complex.
Canadian Family Camping Federation conservation chair Claude Hebert urged pollution fight at Georgetown Fire Flies meeting on November 1 in Cedarvale. He warned about industrial waste and detergents harming air water and wildlife, urged letters to MPs political action and backing conservation authorities, and noted light penalties on polluters while calling for broader public demand. Stan Woodhouse attended. Fire Flies planned a December Christmas meeting and a Santa Claus parade float.
Three Georgetown accidents this week left drivers with injuries or minor bumps. Arthur's car brakes failed on Guelph Street causing a collision with Roy Hansen’s vehicle and a hydro pole. A three car crash at Guelph and Water Streets injured Raphael Burke and involved John Eves and Ken Leslie. A third crash at the Georgetown Market entrance injured Betty Holbrough as James Holbrough’s car collided with a westbound vehicle. Total damage cited at multiple sites around $650 and $900.
Fifteen Halton County ministers watched last week’s films on family life education for grades seven and eight. Rev Keith Hawkes and his wife praised the program as excellent and suitable for young people. Hawkes noted it is used in schools but kinder garten to grade five films are not yet used, and he believed the sex education films were not too exposed for young minds. Nick Volpe, health education coordinator, said the films address lack of health education up to grade six and cover reproduction leading to human birth. In Esquesing, M J Furlong condemned a 25 percent cut in teacher salaries and senior admin pay as irresponsible during commencement exercises, defending the school board amid salary negotiations.
A two car crash near Barrie on November 12 killed three men, including David Haigh 23 a Douglas Aircraft employee from Downsview who died of injuries at Royal Victoria Hospital Barrie. Also killed were Aaron Hall Streetsville and Gerald Burson Sudbury. Mrs Burson injured. Haigh married to Bonnie Stuttard. Funeral held in Parry Sound.
Georgetown residents form Peace Biafra Day activists led by former CBC announcer Stanley Burke. Interpax aims to pressure Canada to push for peace in the Nigeria Biafra war while churches collect for famine relief and Canalrelief receives funds from Christian Reformed Church offerings.
Moore Park council on Monday night voted to name the five acre park Emmerson Park after Mayor Emmerson. Dr Ern Hyde had argued for Moore Park to honor the land’s history and earlier mayors, but changed his stance and supported the Emmerson name by the end of the meeting.
