The appeal urges Georgetown residents to buy Victory Loan bonds to support Allied forces in Italy and hasten victory. It notes subscriptions may not be complete until next week and calls for a strong final effort before the week ends to reach the local objective.
The week records show dull cloudy weather with rare sun and nightly showers. Rainfall totals and temperatures are listed for dates from November 2 to November 8, noting light to moderate precipitation and cooler readings at times.
Members appointed to attend the Convention Hall in Guelph on Thursday. The Navy League was voted $1000. A committee to fill two posts and another to address Rest Room access for the Public were noted. The council favorably received the report about the Municipal Building Rest Room but a caretaker had not been secured.
The Georgetown Girls' Pipe Band sponsored Scottish Concert Party delivered an outstanding show last Thursday at Gregory Theatre. G MacLintock chaired the evening as the group showcased pipe band selections, Highland dancing, duets by Mary and Betty Paul, solos by William Kelly, gymnastic acts by Robert and James Burns, Hedley Shaw in kilts with Gaelic song, and Eleanor Smith’s tap numbers to conclude a well received program.
A letter from Boys' Band instructor Joe Carter thanks the Lomе Goose Band for lending instruments and 615.60 to buy instruction books. It praises supporters Sir B. Willcox Norman Long Morris Herbert Ross Petch and others and invites more schoolchildren with instruments to join rehearsals on Thursdays at 7:45 PM.
Kathleen Preston transfers her Empire Launch business to Mrs. Frank Penson and takes a position with Goodyear Tire in Toronto. She buys a Toronto home and contributes to war relief, including clothing shipments to British bomb victims, while penning the war poem Tanks no Lot for Goodyear’s biweekly plant paper.
Brampton installed the officers of Orion Lodge No. 108 for 1943 4 on November 1st at the Lodge Room under the direction of Noble Grand Pred Mc Nally with Deputy Grand Master of Credit District No. 3 1.0. O.P. in attendance.
A Port Loring hunting party saw Cecil Meeler drown when a light boat capsized in a sudden gale on the Bronday lake. Bert Aizet narrowly escaped. both men were aged locals with kin in Erin Orangeville and Georgetown. Dragging for Meeler continued as Aizet recovered from exposure.
A B Clarke dies at his Georgetown home on a Tuesday evening in November. He was born in England, son of the late Capt James Clarke and Mira Clarke, aged in his ttn year. He worked 15 years with Mallend Empire then agr editor for Toronto Otohe before moving to Georgetown. Survived by wife Laure Davey and children James Georgetown Ptr Barry Clarke Jed Larns Soote England Gy t. Clarts in Italy with the Gaskatoon Light Infantry Frank Martin and Dorothy Eric at home. Sister Mrs Hate Thomas of Liver. Private funeral to be held at his home Friday November 17 with interment Greenwood Cemetery.
The death of Mrs Louis Walterhouse of Cookeville occurred at her daughter Mrs Campbell Bleen’s Georgetown home on Tuesday October 2. She was in her 80th year, born in Claremont, moved to Cookeville as a child, and active in Cooksville United Church. Survived by three daughters and one son Frank of Cooksville.
Forty two plow boys and girls faced poor weather at the Halton Plowing Match at Bert Puller Park near Drumguin Trafalgar Township last Friday. Top provincial plowmen competed in the open jointer class with notable names such as Margaret Erb Elmer Armstrong Bob Brown and Ed Cray among entrants. Awards handed by judges Pred Featherstone and others were announced at a banquet attended by 150 guests with speeches from W. E. Breckon and W. N. Gilbert.
Officers and teachers from eight churches attended the Halton Deanery Sunday School Association convention at Grace Church Milton. Walter Carpenter Georgetown was elected President with D Wilson Bronte as Secretary Treasurer and Humphrey Brown Milton as representative on the Diocesan Board.
Remembrance Day services will be held at the Cenotaph on Sunday November 14 at 2 60 p m in honour of those who paid the supreme sacrifice in the Great War of 1914 1918 A parade forms on Mill Street at 1 30 p m and proceeds to the cenotaph Rev OC Cochrane will give an address the Honour Roll will be read and wreaths placed Rev R O Todd will lead in prayer and several hymns will be sung with the band in attendance
A quiet Saturday wedding at St George s Church of England joined Muriel Anne Hewson and Pte Wheldon Emmerson in matrimony with Rev W G Thompson officiating. Attendants included Mrs L A Wardlaw and James Emmerson. reception followed at the bride s home.
The Girl Guides of St George’s Church marked one year with a party on November 3. There are 31 guides and 2 leutenants under Mrs J L Lambert. Guests included Mr J D Kelly Mr M L OH Moyer and fre Pred Armstrong. Prizes were awarded for nature study Morse signalling knotting and attendance. The Guides donated 12 prayer books and 12 hymn books to the church.
Members of the United Church Boys Club enjoyed a theatre party and bun feed led by Graham Parnell. They watched the film Spitfire about the fighter’s wartime role and presented Farnell with an Air-Force Money Belt. Clare Durns read an address praising Farnell and wishing him luck in the R.C.A.P. Farnell is the third leader from the church to enlist, following Stewart Maclaren in 1941 and Jack Cornett in 1942.
Beaumont workers mailed forty four parcels to the Glen Boys overseas containing socks gloves pruit cake chocolate gum hot chocolate pea soup tobacco cigarettes sardines cheese soda biscuits soap laundry soap shoe laces shoe polish writing pad envelopes and a personal Christmas card with a seasonal verse.
Pte Clayton Bradley moved from Camp Borden to Debert New Brunswick. Chief Petty Officer Johnny Emmar son now at sea. Sgmn George Sargent and Symn Cecil Davidson arrived overseas after a good crossing. Davidson and Sargent traveled together from Vimy Barracks Kingston. Le Corpl F J Castle promoted to Corporal serving in Italy with the 11th Army Tank Bn 1st Canadian Division. Pte Jean Tennant of Rosedale Barracks home for a visit. The corvette Borden was praised on Red Pepper News for saving survivors and equipment. Ronald Mendham, crew member, has served since 1941.
