A wartime rallying message urges citizens to purchase Victory Bonds to support arms and munitions. W F Bradley and I E Flack chair Georgetown and District Victory Loan committees, stressing determination and duty.
Captain Sloan and Mrs J R Sloan of the Salvation Army have been transferred to the Wychwood Corps Toronto and left Brampton Georgetown last week. Captain Sloan arrived in Brampton in June 1943 and succeeded Major W E Sanford as Corps Adjutant. R Baddeley and Lieutenant F Bough, with two ladies, have been stationed at Bowmanville and succeed Captain and Mrs Sloan.
Ellen Hayward born Ellen Layzell in London England died at Guelph General Hospital in her seventy second year after a period of good health. She married Enos Hayward in 1897 and moved to Canada 1907 settling in Terra Cotta then Guelph. Survived by three sons Harry Walter and Thomas, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral from McLagan and Ross Friday with Rev G Mackey at St Patrick's Anglican Church. Interment Woodlawn Cemetery.
Social notes recount weekend visits by Lindley Beaumont in Hamilton and Ancaster, Hancocks in Toronto, and Sally Blick returning to Toronto after a six day leave. Eighteen girls attended a Girl Guides meeting at United Church with Evelyn Robinson and Betty Dickenson in charge. Mrs Presswood led the group as Wayne Norton heads to Vancouver with his mother.
A massive squash in Stouffville grown by Mr. Jonas Lewis weighs 53 pounds, described as the largest seen. It sat in the window of Reeve A E Weldon and drew attention for its size and curiosity, promising a difficult task to use up.
Bond sales at S and S totaled 22 500 by week two, 125 percent of target, averaging 100 per employee. Thirty four Christmas parcels to overseas servicemen were sent by the Active Service Fund Committee. Several staff news notes follow including leave, transfers, and social events.
Mrs. A W Nixon widow of Dr A W Nixon died at The Hedges on Wednesday after a long illness. She was the daughter of the Barber family, spent most life in Georgetown, aided Red Cross in wars, carried on meteorological work, funeral at 3 pm Friday with Rev C C Cochrane, interment in Greenwood Cemetery.
The obituary notes the death of Walker Belyea of Toronto in his 55th year after a death on Tuesday night. He was known locally for sharing his cottage on the Mountain for corn roasts and picnics and for his generosity to community groups. He is survived by his widow and three sons, two of whom are overseas. Funeral services were held at St Jude's Church Toronto with the rector assisted by Archdeacon Thompson and included a cremation.
Mrs Susan Colman, among Georgetown's oldest citizens, marked her 83rd birthday on November 6 at her son Albert's home. Attending were five children William and his wife and daughter Lily of Hamilton Maude of Toronto James and his wife and daughter Marjory of Toronto Glenna of Toronto, plus four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. A Baptist W M S group brought a bouquet of mums in honor of the occasion.
The Limehouse W I gathering opened with a hymn and Daily Prayer at Mrs. C. E. Meredith’s home. A two minute silence honored war service, approval of a $50 Victory Bond install plan, and donations to Soldiers' Comforts and Acton War Services were recorded.
The Seventh Victory Loan shows promising gains as Georgetown and Esquesing District near its 385000 goal with 300000 subscribed. Local payrolls included, Esquesing reports 95000 and the town 146900 while Georgetown totals 176350. volunteers urge continuing effort to reach the top.

Flying Officer David Crichton reports to East Coast after furlough with wife in Toronto and parents in Georgetown. two years service in Ceylon and Far East. Fit Lieut. Ian MacKenzie transferred from Yarmouth to Sydney New Brunswick. Pte. Jack Hemphill celebrates fourth overseas birthday in Italy on November 11. LAC Ted Stigger on weekend leave. Fit Lieut. Ken Mackenzie on month’s leave with parents. Leonard J. (Bush) Bell commissioned Pilot Officer November 1 and home on leave. LAC Gordon Martin of Camp Borden home on weekend leave.
The Ashgrove Women’s Institute social hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Horace Barnes saw Euchre and Crokinole play with prizes awarded to 1st Lily Wilson and Clare Wilson, 2nd John Bird and Claude Pickett, travelling prizes to Mrs. Frank Ruddell and John Bird, and crokinole to Gladys Ruddell and W. J. Alexander. The U P S citizenship meeting led by Douglas Currie included readings by Harvey Nurse and Ismey Kean, a vocal duet by Betty Ruddell and Doris Brownridge, a poem by Elsie Bird, and a talk on Jack Miner with Rev. J. O. Totton closing. Halton Y P U Rally set for Nov 10 in Milton United Church with Rev Russell Graham of India as speaker.
Mrs Charles Cochrane visits Kingston where her father Rev A E Cameron is in hospital with a broken shoulder from a fall. The parish clergyman’s condition is steady as he receives care.
Ottawa reported Pte Norman Hugh McDonald missing in action in France since October 17. He served with the 48th Highlanders and Royal Hamilton Light Infantry after enlisting in 1942, was 21 in February, formerly with Direct Winter Transport in Toronto, and is one of ten siblings with relatives overseas or at home.
