Night constables report fire at the Oat block site in Georgetown. Fire brigade used two hose lines to prevent spread to a nearby office and lumber storehouse, but the gutted building and its machinery were destroyed. Loss worsened by lumber shortages and labor scarcity affecting the industrial center.
Mrs Leonard Watson, aged eighty nine, lives alone in her own home and tends a large garden. She recalls selling thousands of pounds of raspberries last summer and remains active in papering and painting. Watson was born in Limehour, married Leonard Watson fifty one years ago, and they farmed near Rockwood before retiring in 1912. She has three nieces and one nephew. one nephew lives in Hampton and another serves overseas.
A delegation from the Womens Institute discussed opening the municipal building restroom. Council, with Mayor Gibbons leading, approved the public facility and accepted the institute to maintain cleanliness and supplies until a general caretaker is hired. Night Constable Fordyce will halt town truck use to improve efficiency.
The BirOiteon House hosts a dinner meeting where 63 Lions from Zone 6 welcome Deputy District Governor Ross Clemens. Attendees include leaders from Hamilton Dundas Burlington Port Credit Brampton and Brampton club members with remarks on postwar planning youth outreach and community service.
Dorothy Walker Cleave and Joseph Kawin Hartley wed at Knox Presbyterian Church with Rev. C. C. Cochrane officiating. The ceremony featured frosted cedar and mums décor, a white satin gown, and a Bible bouquet. Family and guests included Mrs Huatt McChire as matron of honor and Gordon Hume as groomsman, followed by a pink and white reception for seventy five guests.
The Uranch 130 Canadian Legion held its regular meeting with Comrade J W P McCartney presiding. The group approved 6309 for a Victory Bond purchase for the school and planned a November 5th gathering with a chicken supper and concert. Members discussed expanding funds for children of comrades in Canada and overseas, welcomed new members, and prepared gifts for past Zone Commanders.
The Fifth Victory Loan drive pushes toward a $370,000 goal as Georgetown and vicinity rally with leaders reporting progress. By Tuesday night $758,600 had been subscribed excluding payroll savings, with Bank of Commerce at $117,300 and notable volunteers named for credit. The campaign urges continued momentum through week’s end to clear the loan.
Georgetown soldiers’ comfort group reports 275 names receiving items including 31 boxes of miles and chuckles to non-smokers 241 lots to smokers and tobacco to three POWs. They thank the Herald for support and extend Christmas wishes to all contributors.
The Lorne Scots W A have sent eighty two Christmas parcels overseas to men of the unit and plan similar care for members still in Canada. Parcels include cake gum socks soap toothpaste papers towels razor blades and cigarettes. A bingo at Mrs William Taylor's home raised funds for the fund with thirty one members attending.
Blue Mountain School held a Thursday dance to raise funds for the Red Cross. A quilt donated by Ward 5 ladies, won by Mrs. W. A. Wilson of Georgetown, drew by Muriel Hills. Proceeds from ticket sales totaled 30.00.
At St George's and St Alban's last Sunday the Rector announced the General Synod of the Church of England in Canada has urged Canadians eighteen and older to sign a refugee petition. The resolution calls Canada to offer sanctuary to victims of religious and political persecution in Europe.
