Monks Near Georgetown Eye Apple Venture From Oka
Trappist monks from Oka Quebec, famed for monastery cheese, may gain fame for apples from 36 acres of orchards on a 50 acre site bought from Theresa St Jean who ran an orphanage there for 30 years. The new English language monastery will be Canada’s first under the order. Georgetown Rotary Club again invites seniors to the annual Christmas Party at Holy Cross Church Auditorium on Monday December 5 at 7 pm with dinner and transport.

Milton region faces injunction bid over proposed garbage dump
Opponents of the regional dump in Milton will seek an injunction in the Ontario Supreme Court on November 24. A August 23 adjournment allowed lawyers to review witnesses as Justice Meyer Lerner refused a temporary injunction. The Tremaine Britannia Citizens Group seeks to block bylaw or resolution actions relating to the F site.

Stop saving start spending minister says
Canadian finance minister Jean Chretien urged Canadians to spend savings to boost the economy while cautioning against overloading the economy. He spoke to about 300 at the Halton Liberal Association meeting and called the situation unprecedented with inflation unemployment and political instability. He warned full employment is unattainable and cited U.S. recession relative to Canada as a pressure point. He noted improved dollar strength and phased removal of wage and price controls beginning April 14 1978.

The Halton region unveiled volume one of its draft official plan, a 100 page document with 252 policies guiding development to 2001. It foresees regional population rising to 410,000 and 150,500 jobs by 2001, with Halton Hills reaching about 50,000 residents.

Public input sought on Hallon's draft official plan
Public input into Hallon's first official plan likely waits until early January. The draft plan released last Tuesday heads back to committee Nov. B with councillor comments. Volume two and a waste management policy paper will be presented. Costs of public presentation methods to be tabled Nov. 25. The draft may reach 500 persons and agencies. A condensed version may go to every regional home. Two public meetings per municipality are planned.
