Oxfam Walk Raises Almost Double Last Year

George Wilson, treasurer of the Halton-Pead area million walk, reported May Walk funds totaled 56 500 by the weekend. Most came in on Saturday and he expected the final total to exceed 65 000, nearly doubling last year’s record.

High St John Award to Dan Scarborough

Dan Scarborough of 4 Weber Dr will receive St John Ambulance second highest award the Priory Vote of Thanks at Hart House June 15. Lt Governor Earl Rowe will preside in a ceremony that surprised Scarborough, a former Georgetown Volunteer Ambulance chief. Western Graduate Carol McGilvray Receives BA at University

Carol McGilvray daughter of Mr and Mrs Garfield McGilvray of 8 Guelph Street earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Western Ontario convocation held in Alumni Hall. She specialized in French and was joined by family including her parents siblings and relatives from London Peterborough and Wyoming for a reception and dinner at Hook's Restaurant.

Four Departments Fight Friday Fire at Mushroom Plant

A large fire of unknown origin destroyed a mushroom growing complex in Meadowaglen's northern town limits Friday night, with losses estimated over 60,000. Firefighters from four Halton communities battled the flames for hours, protecting neighboring Smith & Stone plant and nearby homes from falling embers. Manager Ernie Skrow praised the fire crews, saying their quick work preserved employment and production. Georgetown Fire Chief Envin Lewis called for county mutual aid, with aid from Oakville Acton and Milton. Replacement work will begin in months on the damaged building previously used for growing mushrooms.

Teaching Career Showcases Garth Wright Qualified Educator

Garth Wright earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from the University of Western Ontario on May day. He is the son of Mr and Mrs James Wright of 65 Edward Street Georgetown, previously residents two years, and completed his studies at St Andrew's College Aurora before finishing at Alsonquin Composite School North Bay. The Wrights moved from Island Falls north of Cochrane to town. Garth will study next year at Althouse College of Education in London and plans to teach in a public school.

Brampton Youths Remanded On Drug Charge

A Brampton youth charged in April with possession of drugs was remanded until June 18 after appearing in court on Tuesday May 21. A fourth member of the group arrested was fined 25 dollars in Juvenile Court last week.

Open Culverts Standoff With Developer Delays Council

Halton County Health Unit and Skidton County Safety Officer read letters to council on Monday stating they have no authority over culverts in the Bain Cr and Fayan Dr area. The Health Unit warned of hazards including excavations, open storm sewers, and a hundred acres of mud, but the letter says the issue does not fall under public health powers.

Glen Wright Fatally Injured in Accident

A Georgetown man Glen Gerald Wright 20 of 7 William Street Georgetown died Saturday on Highway 103 fifteen miles north of Midland. Police believe he may have fallen asleep at the wheel causing his car to cross the center line and collide with a transport truck driven by Gerhard Monvar of Rexdale who was unhurt. Wright was a son husband and father with six brothers and a sister. Funeral services were at Harold McClure Funeral Home and interment in Greenwood Cemetery.

Parked cars curb front yards under McMaster by law

Georgetown residents face new zoning rules limiting front yard parking to paved surfaces and banning vehicles over one ton unless covered spaces exist. The May council vote, amid court doubt, also altered two other zoning measures and approved more residential lots on King Street North.
