Citizens applaud council for lowering the mill rate by two mills as arrears collection improves civic services. The loss of the night constable sparks debate on security needs and burglary insurance implications in Georgetown during wartime.
J J Jamieson was re-elected president of the Peel Halton Children's Aid Society at the annual meeting. G F Thompson Milton superintendent reported a large workload increase due to war conditions and the British Child Guest Movement in 1940. Judge Cochrane Peel County praised child welfare laws, and new officers were elected for the coming year.
Mary Jane McGivray Sloan, oldest Glen Williams resident and widow of William Sloan, died May 1 after a long illness. Born in Everton Ontario she moved from Adjala Tottenham to Glen Williams 17 years ago. She leaves a daughter Mrs. Robert Elliott of Toronto and siblings. Funeral from her home to Sloan's Cemetery was led by Rev. Arthur Leggett and Rev. W D Turner.
A proposal to combine the third and fourth year engineering curricula in Canadian universities into a single term starting in the Fall and continuing to graduation with holidays factored in. The aim is to accelerate training for war work in radio and chemical fleets.
Georgetown Public and Schools present a two hour festival program at Georgetown United Church on Monday evening to aid the Herald’s War Victims Fund. Admission is 25 cents for adults and 15 cents for children with all proceeds going to charity.
Council will sponsor a civilian defence scheme with ARP work led by Col James Ballantine Fred McCartney and others including J B Wallace Toronto representative of the St John Ambulance Association This includes a nine lecture course and further specialized work The council approved cooperation and set a public meeting to form a Civilian Defence Committee Henry Marchment received a $1 raise to 20 a week and other budget items were approved, continuation on Page 8.
The Lorne Scots (P D and H) Regiment mobilized for active service last week and left for Standard Barracks in Hamilton last Saturday. About fifty local volunteers are included. Lieut Paul Barber remains for a few days and invites additional recruits. On Wednesday the regiment paraded Main Street where Mayor Joseph Gibbons spoke of community support upon their return.
Form I of Georgetown High School was ordered closed on Friday after one scarlet fever case. All contacts were examined and found free of the disease. The room was disinfected and will be closed seven days. The M.O.H. said further cases are doubtful.
The weather department reports April was the warmest in 99 years, with average temps around 56.6 F. It was also the driest in years, only one rainy day and light showers totaling about 1.75 inches. Vegetation advanced, maple leaves near half size, and birds from the south arrived early. Local weekly records show highs and lows from 46 to 70 degrees with a 34 degree low.
Georgetown Lions Club meets at McGibbon Hotel with District Governor Bennett of Oakville and J. J. Wood of Hamilton as guests. He praises Lions for unity, recalls ARP support, commends secretary Welk and Past Chief Long, and introduces films on baseball training camps, naval convoy work, swimming, and salmon fishing.
A brief note states the British War Victims Fund collected 877 dollars and 25 cents at Georgetown, reflecting local donations and support. The amount highlights community action to aid injured and bereaved in the ongoing conflict.
A whist party in the Legion Rooms was held by the Bon Temps Club for the British War Victims fund. About $11 was raised. Committee members and guests included Miss Isabel McDermid, Margaret Frenk, Isabel Thompson, Marjorie Gault, and numerous others.
A brief reader missive from Terra Cotta Ontario dated May 6 1941 thanks the Georgetown Herald editor for appreciation and support. The轻 message expresses sincere gratitude and signs with a courteous closing.
