Defence Purchasing Board Bill moving through Commons

Ottawa reports the defence department has 63 million dollars this year to strengthen national security. The Independent Defence Purchasing Board will negotiate and recommend contracts for defence equipment over 5000 dollars with cabinet approval. The board aims to curb profits above five percent on non tendered contracts and favors using both public and private munitions production.

Regular Meeting of Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire

A regular meeting of the 1.0.D.E Chapter was held at Mrs. L. W. Dann’s home on March 20 with twenty six members present. Minutes and treasurer’s report were reviewed. Mrs. K. D. Barber welcomed new members. Mrs. C. R. Brown from Toronto spoke on aims of the empire order and urged unity among women. Georgetown’s charter application was noted. Refreshments followed and thanks given to Mrs. Dann.

Bridge Club prizes awarded at Monday night event

The Men's Bridge Club Monday night printed winners with H. Lillico and D. Wallace taking first prize. Ed Hoare and H. Wright earned second, close to the leaders, while F. Spires and F. Wright received third. Extra prizes announced for next Monday.

Council abandons municipal building project in Georgetown

The Georgetown Town Council chose debt reduction over constructing a public building this year. At Thursday’s meeting they sold Creelman’s Ltd. site to Mrs. W. Preston and Mr. H. Silver who plan to erect business buildings that will benefit the town financially.

The Georgetown Lions Club gathered Monday at 6 30 p m for dinner and meeting at the Mc Gibbon Hotel chaired by H C Mc Clure. Guests planned for April 17 district governor and Ladies Night with Captain Innis of Canada’s Ratepayers Association to speak at the public library.

Town Sewage System By-law To be Voted On Dec 4th

Council motions to prepare a by law for the installation of a sewage system to be submitted to electors on Monday December 4 1989. The meeting also heard bids on Creelman factory property and a 22 ft 6 inch frontage on Main Street with transfers authorized. Georgetown Lions edged Stratford 4 3 in a frantic Southern Ontario Midget N H L playoff opener. Flannagan and Rohfritsch starred for Georgetown while Beaumont and Coffell led Stratford, with the return game to Stratford looming and Copper Cliff on the horizon for the Ontario title.

Ladies attended a St Patrick tea at Norval United Church on Friday March 17 with piano duets by Mrs R H Wright and Mrs F Wilson and an address on St Patrick by Mrs Sutclipe.
