Spectator Ottawa surveys looming leadership contest as Sir Robert Bennett retires. Dr. Manion and Denton Massey emerge as early favorites though many names circulate. The piece notes plans for party organization and platform shaping before the national convention.
The third annual Halton seed fair at Acton last Friday and Saturday drew more entries than last year. Winners span oats barley wheat peas alfalfa alsike timothy potatoes and Irish cobbler with J E Pearen Acton and J E Griffin Acton among top exhibitors.
Peter Opichany faced a March 22 bail hearing after a Wednes day night crash that killed Hilton Lemman and George Frederick near Acton. Walter Brownridge’s car collided with the Oshawa group, injuring Joe Dwyer who remained in Guelph General Hospital unconscious. Opichany and a girl escaped with minor injuries.
The St Patrick s supper and concert at the United Church drew a large audience. The basement setting with green decor and Irish symbols created a festive mood. Soloists Miss Capps and Mr E Capps, comic singer Morley Hallett, piano accordionist Earl Bunting, and elocutionist Miss Armistead performed before the National Anthem and benediction ended the evening.
A large turnout at Nerval Junior Farmers and Junior Institute held at the Reid home on Tuesday evening March 8. The girls’ meeting featured a happiness motto by Mary McGee. Isabel Wrigglesworth presented on Halton County industries. An exhibit of candy and recipe exchanges occurred. Alexina Sinclair demonstrated marshilation. Alvin Anderson of Hornby spoke to the boys on care and management. Donald McNabb discussed grain variety and fertilizer tests. Betty Rein performed piano and Angus McNabb read. Guest speaker C. D. Gorham, Peel County Agricultural Representative, spoke on reforestation.
In a tense exchange, a policeman demands the name of Speed Piend. Piend hesitates, prompting the officer to insist on identifying him rather than his surname.
The regular W C T U meeting March 11 at Mrs. A R Speight’s home was led by president Mrs. Vannatter. Devotional on The Prayer Life of Jesus featured scripture, with music by Mrs. Vannatter and granddaughter Betty Speight, and piano by Buck and Joan. Discussions explored valuing prayer and its link to service, noting funding needs for scientific temperance education and the Travellers' Aid role. The group adjourned to meet next month at Mrs. R H Wright’s home.
Georgetown High SchoolBoard met Monday evening March 14 with all members present. After reviewing minutes and paying several small accounts the board unanimously decided to keep teacher salaries unchanged due to the current uncertain condition and parity with other high schools. They discussed a possible new wing for the building and an interview with Dr Rogers, head inspector of high schools.

Merton Players won the Halton county drama festival finals in Burlington last Friday night earning the Ridgewood trophy from Harland Smith for The Country Slicker. Palermo Players' Guild took second with Nellie McNabb and Wickens Memorial challenge cup. finalists included Halton Players and Bronte Dramatic Club.
Esquesing council met March 14 1938 with Reeve N A Robinson presiding. The relief officer announced the discontinuation of township relief after April 16 1938 and bids were invited for a motor grader with road work to be tendered. Regular finances and by law actions were approved including claims and by law readings.
The Duncan Campbell Shorthorn herd from Moffatt drew hundreds of breeders and buyers to Guelph on Monday. Thirty three lots sold for a total of 8195 dollars with the top bid reaching 900 dollars for an imported two year old Helfer with calf. Harry Newman of Dunbarton bought the top price, the Mystic Pearl herd post money value remains noted.
