The annual Red Cross fundraising campaign has begun with the goal of six thousand dollars. Local leaders list canvass teams and community volunteers under ward chairmen to support Allied service members and war relief.
C E Herrington edits a new specialty poultry publication to cover waterfowl bantams pet stock and pigeons with reports from Guelph Brampton and Brampton shows. The first issue reaches 1300 subscribers and many prepaid three years.
Celia Frances Broad, 17, niece of Mr and Mrs C G English Esquee ing and Mr and Mrs P A English Kew Toronto, earns a scholarship to Westfield College University of London for three years at $300 per year. Daughter of H O Broad a veteran teacher, she faced a bomb damaged home in Bournemouth in November 1943 while living at Forestone Road.
The Georgetown and Halton County Poultry Association hosted its February meeting at Town Hall with members from Brampton Milton and Georgetown attending. Ontario Agricultural College expert J McCraith discussed hybrids, crossbreeding results, and the potential for uniform progeny while noting purebreds remain ideal if stock is available. An open forum followed and a unanimous vote of thanks was recorded.

Pte Percy King, serving since two years with the Lorne Scots, sent letters home via his wife Elsie Bullock. He remained on duty in Germany for a week, with injuries not considered serious. He went overseas to England, then to France with the Toronto Scottish after D Day.
In ill health for two months, Mrs Thomas Bristow died at 989 Dovercourt Rd Toronto on Friday March 2. Funeral held Monday at Myer Ellett Chapel conducted by Rev L I Hunter of Westmoreland United Church. Interment Park Lawn Cemetery. Survived by daughter Kathleen sister two brothers Lewis Georgetown and Charles McNally Terra Cotta attended funeral.
The Balch family learned that Pte W H Balch, brother of Mrs W Bedell, is missing in action after serving with the Essex Scottish in France Belgium and Holland. Born in Somerset England he moved to Canada in 1927 settling in New Brunswick before relocating to Ontario. He expected home on leave for his 38th birthday on the 28th.
The Presbyterian Moderator Rev A C Stewart preached two sermons last Sunday at Knox and Limehouse Churches. He urged members to act in Christian life, stressed the Church rests on Christ not on men, and asked for prayers as he bears his duties. Elders-elect were welcomed and special music featured Miss Mary Moyer and Mrs Herbert Harlow with Miss Jean Mac Donald.
War brings sadness to Georgetown and Elora families as Pte. William Kay dies of wounds. Born in Georgetown, 24, he moved to Elora, studied at Calgary School of Practical Science, and worked with Elora and Fergus Motors. Enlisted 1942 with Kitchener-Waterloo Regiment. served in France Belgium Holland. recently cited for bravery at Nieuprop. Survived by parents and two brothers in Georgetown and England.
Ashgrove Y P A held a skating party at Georgetown Arena on Wednesday evening February 28. After skating, attendees enjoyed lunch at the home of Mr and Mrs Howard Wrigglesworth.
Verdun Rebekah Lodge No. 184 hosted a marathon euchre at Oddfellows Hall drawing 22 tables for the fifth night. Prizes went to winners including Mrs. E. Tyers and Mrs. W. King with 353 points, Miss Rowena Stull in third, and consolation prizes to Miss L. Francis and others. High nightly scores included Olive Logan 112 and A Wilson 103. a tea service followed, remarks by Noble Grand Mrs. Myrtle Dron, and the National Anthem closed the evening.
Martha Jane Franklin-Benton died suddenly at her son Arthur’s Limehouse home on February 20. Born in Limehouse in 1878 to James D. Lane and Hannah Havens, she lived in Acton from 1904 for thirteen years, then returned to Limehouse. She was widowed two years ago and survived by two sons Arthur William and John Ritchie, three grandsons, and was a member of Limehouse Presbyterian Church. Funeral conducted by Rev. C. C. Cochrane on February 22 with services at the son’s home and church. burial in the adjacent cemetery. Pallbearers named.
About 60 choir members from St George s Knox United and Baptist churches join for the cantata Olivet to Calvary. Miss Lynda Stewart directs with organists from Presbyterian and Baptist churches assisting. The performance is in the United Church on March 29.
Georgetown Red Cross branches urge more workers as a weather affected meeting of the Georgetown Branch extended the annual gathering. Mrs A Lawson presided and Mrs R Ross was elected vice president. knitting convener roles and weekly room supervision slots were assigned to local members. A Monday shipment of children's clothing is planned for next week.
Mild weather hurt ice quality but large crowds attended the arena skating carnival. Major H C McClure hosted, with Mrs McClure and Mrs J L Lambert judging costumes. Winners included Keith Fay, Frank Anderson, Delores Herrington, Marie Hulme, Billie MacCormack, Ronald Denham, Elsie Hiller, and Mr and Mrs Marsell. The Lorne Scots Band and Boys Band members provided music after events.
Friends gathered at the Tennant home in Georgetown to welcome Lieut. Russell Firestine back from Canada where he received treatment after being wounded in France with the Canadian army. Mayor Cleave and local officials attended, with a reception organized by the Georgetown Rehabilitation Council to honor returning servicemen.
The Canadian Girls in Training met in the Sunday Schoolroom of the United Church at 730 on Tuesday February 27 in session led by President Virginia Chapman and Mrs Jeffery. Minutes by Joan Lyon. Next meeting set as a work session to make silhouette pictures. Mission study from Second Pioneers. Ended with Taps.
A funeral service was held from the home of her son Charles McNally at Terra Cotta for Mrs John McNally who died last Monday. Rev J L Self officiated with pallbearers Jos McBride Gerald Downer Harvey Puckley Jack Edge Fred McNally and Westey Rutledge. Interment was at Glen Williams Cemetery.
Pte Clarence Freestone 23 son of Mr and Mrs F C Freestone of Georgetown returns home after service overseas with the 48th Highlanders He arrives for 38 days leave after being overseas since August 1940 He was wounded two days before Christmas 1943 by an 80 mm gun explosion during the battle of Ortone and spent two months in a field hospital in Sicily before being returned to duty.
Mrs. George Herrington brought a nosegay of pansies to the office on Tuesday. The hardy flowers bloom in her rock garden between two banks of mow.
A busy Hornby notice records a Wo men's Institute euchre and dance at the Orange Hall on February 27 with strong turnout. The United Church of Canada Official Board met at the Parsonage the same day, approving reports and fund movements totaling 3983 dollars, and naming officers. A pension fund plan change and March Women's Association quilting social are noted, plus mild weather observations and hints of early spring signals.
