Halton county council debated adding mayors to the county body. Deputy Reeve W Gillies urged private member's bill action. voting rules would grant mayors an extra vote where municipal voting power cannot be split. A committee will discuss with the solicitor and report back next meeting.
Assistant Superintendent E Lavendar outlined Halton Hills plans to add three kindergarten classes and three teachers at George Town school in September 1960 to reduce crowded classes. He described projections for Kennedy, Centennial, Park, Wrigglesworth, and Chapel Street schools, noting enrollment growth, new rooms, and potential middle school changes, with portable classrooms phased out in two years.
Georgetown Horticultural Society held its fourth annual flower show at the renamed armoury with judge panels led by Mrs Stanley May and Mrs Percy Cox. Mrs Leonard Harding won the 1969 Eaton trophy for highest points while Miss Elsie J. Bird took peony and senior arrangement trophies.
Georgetown Alliance Church and friends will welcome their new pastor David J. Phillips and his wife this coming Sunday June 29. The Phillipses recently graduated from Canadian Bible College in Regina and attended Emmanuel Bible College and St Paul Bible College. All services are at Cedarvale Community Centre.
Two small blazes drew local firefighters this week. At DeKleer poultry farm on Seventh Line near Ballinafad a pile of shavings burned, delaying a 10000 chicken order. Later, Sunday night, old coal sheds by Maple Avenue East near the sanitary landfill were completely destroyed.
Erin man Gordon Webster, 67, was killed when his northbound car struck a westbound gravel truck driven by John Milton of Georgetown at the Fourth Line Chinguacousy and No 17 Sideroad junction near 4:30 pm on Monday. Milton and truck owner Jack Ridley of Acton sustained minor injuries and damage to the truck was estimated at $800 as police cited good road conditions contributing to the crash.
The Herald will keep normal office hours on Monday and Tuesday June 30 and July 1 to publish the weekly issue on its usual schedule next week. The paper will observe the holiday at another time.
Gary Thomas Briggs 21 died instantly when his car left Highway 7 west of Esquesing and hit two trees. The Acton OPP collected the scene, identified the vehicle, and investigated with North Halton police. He leaves a wife Marcia LeBlanc and infant son Brian Thomas, along with his parents Howard and Elda Briggs and sisters Alice and Phyllis. Funeral was at St John’s Anglican Church Stewarttown with interment in Greenwood Cemetery Georgetown.
Canadian Family Camping Federation field directors Alice and Bruce Bartleman will attend a Georgetown meeting to organize a local branch. The group, already active in Ontario Alberta and Manitoba, aims to share camping grounds and programs for family campers. The 8 Stevens Crescent gathering opens to all local families interested in camping.
William Dodds of Glen Williams sustained minor injuries after his car left No 22 Sideroad west of the Esquesing Chinguacousy line and struck two trees. Investigators put vehicle damage at 400 dollars. Two hours later Carl Ostrander of Cooksville suffered cuts when his car hit a hydro pole on Esquesing Line south of No 20 Sideroad. car damage estimated at 500 dollars.
Georgetown police logged three minor accidents in the week. At 12.33 a.m. Friday Antonia R. Lorenco’s southbound car on Main Street hit a light standard near Church Street causing 200 dollars in damage. Constable Kenneth Firth investigated. A van driven by Helmut Wiche and a car driven by Harold Dolson collided at Water-Guelph Street corner at 11.10 a.m. Friday, totaling 325 dollars in damage. Constable Tom Thompson reported the van, owned by Continental Cleaning of Clarkson, turned left and struck Dolson’s parked car. An earlier accident involved a tractor-trailer driven by Kenneth Smith and a parked car owned by Brian Leroy Fife. vehicle damage was 180 dollars. Constable Henry Vandersluis attributed damage to Fife’s car on Rosetta Street at 4.20 p.m., when the truck’s right rear dual wheels bumped it.
