Police Chief Suspended After Council Seeks OPC Probe

At a special meeting the Ontario council asked the Ontario Police Commission to investigate Police Chief Roy Haley’s conduct and performance. Pending the inquiry, Haley is suspended with pay as Inspector Harley Lowe becomes acting chief. The vote favored the move despite opposition from several councilors and residents urged nonpolitical oversight.

Inquest Recommends Electric Gates for CN Trestle

Five man inquest jury absolved CN train crew in the death of Kenneth Connely 14 on the Georgetown trestle May 13 and urged immediate safety upgrades. Recommendations include 25 mph speed limit for trestle crossings, fencing from abutments, and electrically operated gates at both ends. Engineers and conductor were exonerated.

Lincolnshire consolation prize nets Jim Walters horse prize

Jim Walters of Weber Drive earned 1800 for a horse named Double AJ that carried Mr Watters to victory without running. Although scratched from the Lincolnshire Sweep, Walters had already drawn a winning ticket and received the prize this week after the March race. Walters plans no major use for the money. A separate two car collision occurred near the Georgetown Market plaza injuring no one and damaging vehicles in a side swipe as lanes narrowed.

Council clash over water bill and silencing ratepayer

Monday's council meeting erupted as Mayor Gibbons adjourned and threatened to eject Harrison Wood after he produced discolored tap water and attacked billing. Wood refused meter access, insisted by law and water act claims, and the council granted two months of minimal $4.50 billing while warning of back charges and possible disconnection.

Seek Township Aid in Restoration of Cemetery

A delegation from St. John's Church in Stewarttown asked Esquesing council for help restoring the old Stewart town cemetery perched atop the hill behind the Orange Hall. Church members and councilors will form a joint committee to assess costs for fencing a cairn and cleanup, with potential township involvement if the owner cannot fund maintenance.

Miss Highway Curve Two Cyclists Injured

David James Presswood of Georgetown and Dan ny James McLean of 181 Main St N suffered head injuries concussions cuts and abrasions when their Harley Davidson motorcycle failed to negotiate a curve on Main Street at the north end. They were eastbound from Acton when the rider lost control. the bike crashed into a fence and tumbled. Damaged vehicle set at $20. The incident occurred at 5 15 p m with Constable Henry Vendersluis investigating.

Cadets Program at Georgetown District High Faces Change

The Department of National Defence will conduct a final inventory check of cadet corps equipment at Georgetown District High School after cadets complete summer training. The board has stated it no longer wishes to sponsor the corps, ending a 40 year sponsorship. C Company of the Lorne Scots Militia Regiment seeks to keep the program alive.

Pair Discovered in Credit River Identified as Mr and Mrs David

A Georgetown couple Gerald David and Aldia Marie David of Ontario drowned in the Credit River near the lower paper mill dam on River Dr. Tuesday. Their unborn child also died. Police and fire units found the bodies within twenty minutes of each other after divers removed them from the river pool. Coroner Dr. J.H. Chamberlain confirmed both deaths. Funeral planned for Friday at Sacre Coeur Roman Catholic Church.

Land Council and McNally Back Industry Move

Baltimore Aircoil Ltd plans a 34,500 square foot factory at George town East Industrial Park. A letter from the firm’s banking council and William McNally requests cooperation and land exchange of two town owned industrial lots. Brampton operation to relocate with about fifty staff next January. The firm operates plants in Maryland and California.

Parish Picnic Ends With Evensong At Eden Mills

St George s Anglican Church held its annual parish picnic at Eden Mills on Sunday with an evensong service led by Rev Eric Mills. Activities included swimming races and a patch race won by Tom Parry after a sewing mishap by Mrs Tom Van Sickler. Mystery woman Mrs Jack King was identified by Ricky Chaplin, Eva Middleton won a hidden prize, and race results list winners across multiple age groups with Carol Ewles, Angela Mills among the seniors.
