Council discussed town accounts with a proposed method where each chairman presents a department list after initial finance committee checks. Some members opposed the shift from last year’s system, including Deputy Reeve Gray and Drs McGilvray and Sykes.
The writer vents about weather reporting in harsh conditions. He notes 6 inches of snow is manageable while imagining Morin Heights Quebec with 30 below zero and two feet of snow, suggesting the challenge of recording extreme cold.
Toronto born Rev Glen Wardell former minister of Calvary Baptist Brampton died January 17 at Peel Memorial Hospital aged 68. Founder of the Fellowship of Real Churches in Canada he served 45 years in ministry including 25 with the group he helped found. Funeral at Calvary Baptist Church conducted by Rev Frank Holiday and Rev Donald Hackett. Interment Brampton Cemetery. Surviving wife Maude Hewetson two sons Donald and Harold a daughter Ruth and sister Ina.
A congregational visit to every Knox Presbyterian member is planned for February. The annual meeting followed a meat pie dinner served by the Women’s Association. Rev. Alex Calder chaired the meeting and Mrs. William Cromar was secretary.
Eleanor Philipine Schenk daughter of Mr and Mrs William Schenk of Glen Williams wed William Ivan Hughes RCAF son of Mr and Mrs Ivan Copley at Norval United Church manse on January 10. Rev W Edgar Gill officiated. The bride studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music and wore white organza. Allan Adams nine, son of Mr and Mrs Adams, was treated after a street accident on Main Street when struck by a 1948 Rover driven by Frederick Hamilton.
Frank Ptashnik scored at 11.55 of the third period giving the Raiders a 7 to 6 win over the Oakville Meteors. Playing coach Joe Schertzl suffered a leg injury late in the second period and did not play the final 20 minutes.
Georgetown built a 41 point lead early but Brampton narrowed the gap as Cunningham found the net twice for Georgetown while Ptashnik and Inglis contributed for Brampton. Oakville's Sinclair and Civic added goals as the seesaw battle kept the crowd on edge until the final buzzer.
Miss Adah Coventry former resident of Georgetown turned ninety-one on December 28. She now lives in Milton at Halton Centennial Manor after moving from 30 Church Street last November. Born at her parents home on the third line west Chinguacousy she later moved to Stewarttown and came to Georgetown fifty years ago. Rave and Sir Teera predeceased her with John O Neill dying two years ago. She has remained active in the community and earns broad respect.
Elmira Polar Kings defeated the Raiders 87 2 at Memorial Arena in an Intermediate A Senior B hockey game. Dave Irons and Ron Dixon led a late Elmira surge as Irons scored four and Dixon three, with Snez Mikolc Trapp Doby Gear and Smoka also scoring for Elmira.
Brownies sold cookies at Georgetown homes on Saturday raising a net profit of 110 dollars. The sale contributed the Brownies' share of the camp quota while parents aided by driving the girls on their routes.
An updated traffic by law plan aims to introduce several through streets and new amendments to replace the unwieldy old by law. Council discussed the draft prepared from last year by former town engineer Douglas Wilson and Dr Alfred Sykes urged one way Wesleyan Street though not in the recommendation.
J L Lambert was named chairman of the Public Library Board on January 21 with Mrs D W Baxter as secretary and Gordon Tee as treasurer. Other returning members and committee assignments were noted, and circulation reached 2 563 last year. The board approved a by law to fund a future water charge for a new disposal plant, while debates over open council discussion and debenture market timing were highlighted by Dr. Fred Harrison.
The Halton County Fire Prevention Bureau earned a special recognition as the sole county sponsored entry among 588 Canadian communities in the Canada U S Municipal Fire Prevention Contest. Details will follow after results are submitted by the Fire Marshal's office. A 1958 program planning meeting was held at Milton Fire Hall on Monday.
Georgetown Rotary Club heard Robert Roy describe investment types and the benefits of a sound plan. Roy, a Toronto broker and Investment Dealers Association member, noted his local Georgetown stint with Halton Peel and Trust. He encouraged follow up talks and promised future visits.
The Limehouse W A held a meeting at Mrs. Jack Crichtons home on Tuesday to elect officers. The president is Mrs. Crichton, the secretary Mrs. Ted Brown and the treasurer Mrs. A C Patterson.
Anna Marie Spitzer wed Kenneth Ross Ewen in Knox Church with Rev. Alex Calder officiating. The couple left for a Florida honeymoon after a reception at Knox Presbyterian auditorium. Bride wore pearl satin with seeded pearls. groom is son of George Ewen and the late Mrs Ewen of Toronto. Grandmother Mrs Samuel Castle of Kitchener attended.
