Halton regional council narrowly backed a $2 million headquarters project in Oakville last Wednesday. The plan covers architects' fees and related construction costs amid protests that the price is too high and possibly unnecessary.
A broken watermain near Guelph Street and Maple Avenue forced Georgetown District High School and Howard Wrigglesworth Public School to close last Tuesday. Water loss occurred around 10 am and crews rerouted supply. the cold weather blamed, with repair by late afternoon.
Teresa Holland says only a few openings remain for the Dale Carnegie program to be offered in Halton Hills with Herald sponsorship. The general administration committee recommends Halton Hills council authorize repairs to heating components in the Georgetown Indoor Pool halted by the gas company red tags. Snider Huget March engineers advise Mountclair Developments to install duct extensions to fix circulation at a cost not to exceed 350 dollars.
Halton regional councillors voted themselves a 10 percent salary cut for the remaining year of their term, reducing annual pay from 8500 to 7650. The measure saved 21200 for the region across 24 councillors. A separate motion to exempt those who opposed the original pay was defeated. Oakville officials also considered cancelling the pension plan to save 5520 yearly.
Building inspector Doug Sargent reports Hatton Hills issued 765 permits in 1975 with a total value of 14.18 million, down from 794 permits and 15.83 million in 1974. Fees totaled 33,126.20. Residential permits fell to 280 valued at 9.82 million from 322 at 10.11 million.
Halton board chairman Judy Alexander proposes three public meetings in February to explain how 1978 educational spending affects mill rates. Finance chief Bill Lawson warns that provincial support drop from 60 to 57 percent could raise the education mill rate by about 6.5 mills, with 17–18 percent higher per pupil costs for 1976 and potential 14–15 mill increases if programs remain unchanged. The board plans tighter controls across operations to limit rate increases.
Knox Presbyterian Church hosts a Rockathon from 9 pm Friday to 1 pm Sunday to benefit Presbyterian Fellowship House in Prince Albert Saskatchewan. The preliminary hearing for 49 year old Acton resident Horat Baron charged with attempted murder of his wife and two others was adjourned to January 30. Wounds occurred at the Acton farmhouse injuring Baron’s wife Hilda, boarder Gunter Mayer, and Mayer’s nine year old son Wayne. Judge Latimer extended a ban on publishing proceedings from the November 5 bail hearing.
At a Halton Hills works committee meeting Councillor Ern Hyde urged action as unusual winter and rising flood risk threaten the Paper Mill Dam on the Credit River. Mayor Tom Hill discussed cutting a channel, but CVCA officials cited ice dangers and lack of equipment. Engineer Robert Austin will report next meeting. The CVCA weighs removing the dam, with a feasibility study planned this year.
Glen Williams residents report unseasonal rains and heavy snows have balanced out with no current flood signs. An observer notes rain absorbed by snow reduces river threat though warns moisture in the Credit watershed could drive higher earlier river flows than last year.
In Georgetown Legion late Friday into early Saturday the Lions Club held a final draw. Bill McNally won the $10,000 prize, Cathie McFarlane took $1,000, Doris Barrager $500, Eve Wood $200, G. Murphy $100, and several others collected varied sums. Proceeds support the club’s new project.
