Winter weekends bring a surge of toboggans on Georgetown hills as heavy snowfall and ongoing precipitation lure snowmobilers and frost bitten visitors to frosty slopes. Photos inside showcase the snowy scene and riders in action.
Five new councillors were sworn in at Georgetown council with four newcomers. Mayor Emmerson and deputy-reeve Speight led a ceremony praising public service and urging cooperation. A large committee slate was approved including Smith, Hunter, Mackenzie, Levy, Speight, Hyde, Morrow, and Denison with meetings set for the second and fourth Thursdays.
Currie predicts regional government soon and calls this possibly the last township council election. The Esquesing reeve speaks of new responsibilities as Miller and Marshall are welcomed. Deputies and councillors share remarks after swearing in, with a devotional period led by Rev. R. Rugle. Continued on page 18.
The two areas show a wedding license gap in a leap year. Georgetown issued 41 licenses, unchanged from the prior year, while Esquesing rose to 68 from 43. Old jokes about two dollar licenses gave way to ten dollars, and Heenee permits must be obtained three days before the wedding.
Del Majuery is reelected to his 13th term as president of the Georgetown Locals of the Pulp Sulphite and Papermill Workers Union. Steve Emmerson chosen for his 9th term as president of Local 481 Provincial Centers with a slate of officers and trustees named for Local 474 Domtar.
Post office reports a twenty percent drop in mail volume at Georgetown P O despite population growth of about two thousand. Five cent stamps sales fell by 25 000 while six cent stamps rose by 20 000. peak mailing days were December 16 17 and 18. The Georgetown District High School Board becomes a continuing committee under Halton County Board of Education to manage finances and building progress until teachers are called. New hires include Ralph Ursel teaching science and mathematics and Colin Barnfield teaching science and biology.
Mayor Wheldon Emmerson in Knox Church Hall outlined priorities for his first term. He urged shifting more responsibility to town staff, establishing a capital projects priority list, and a focus on beautification. He called for team work to address council issues and noted land negotiations with Brumac as a key upcoming challenge.
Jack Cunningham was elected chief of Georgetown volunteer fire department, succeeding Erwin Lewis who becomes deputy chief. Treasurer Gordon Inglis and Secretary Clarence Spence remain in office. The roster includes captains No 1 to No 3, lieutenants, drivers, and township driver, with many members praised for long service. A meeting chaired by Acting Mayor Wm. F. Hunter and speeches by local officials followed the vote.
More local residents travel abroad for Christmas than ever, with Barbados Jamaica Bermuda and the Caribbean top choices. Florida remains popular while many Canadians and Californians head to Spain Portugal and the islands. Long holidays likely boosted travel and some locals returned to Newfoundland for the season.
