Voters across wards show strong support for expanding the library. In ward one 22 to 6 favor an addition at the present site, ward two 0 to 8, ward three 32 to 82 split between options. Overall result 85 to 46 favoring an addition rather than a new branch. Circulation in January 1968 rose 24 percent from a year earlier.
Georgetown council pressed for a five thousand dollar annual grant from Esquesing Township to help fund the George town public library. The request followed a council meeting and comes amid discussions to extend library services and possibly raise student enrolment, with officials noting a township subsidy and questioning residents’ share of library patrons. Debate focused on equity of service and potential future demands, while a fall decision was anticipated after library board budgeting.
Georgetown Raiders may advance to the OHA Suburban Junior League finals in Milton or Georgetown depending on the remaining semi final results between Milton Merchants and Newmarket UBed men. Milton leads the best of seven 3 1 1 after a tie, with outcomes hinging on tonight and Friday games and venue shifts between Milton and Georgetown.
Mild weather has brought a rash of frozen outdoor water pipes. The works department notes the frost sinks deeper into the ground, keeping the outside crew busy. The town votes to allow a first ever St Patrick's Day parade organized by the newly formed Knights of Columbus planning team for March 17. Mrs Seena Klingbeil celebrated her 90th birthday on February 16 receiving birthday honours from the Provincial Government and gifts. Gustave Klingbeil and family have long ties to Windermere Muskoka area. A 19 year old Georgetown youth was freed on a technicality in a magistrates court after a misfire in the justice system, with magistrate Kenneth Langdon dismissing the charge for failing to leave one half of the road clear. Family members travelled from near and far to share the memory.
Dr Kenneth McCauley was elected president of the Bible Society branch with St Andrews United First and Knox churches among those represented. Other executives include Thomas Parry as secretary Douglas Cole as treasurer and clergy members. The society plans Bible Sunday on November 4 with a door to door canvass the next day. Rev Alex Cowan presided and noted 1987 saw 777000 copies in 77 languages distributed in Canada and 750000 spent on work abroad in 150 countries. The Canadian Bible Society has pledged 800000 toward the 1968 world budget of seven and a half million dollars.
Ten students from George Town Limehouse Acton Milton and Oakville competed in Halton County Public Speaking finals at Stewarttown School. Barbara Horne won first place with The Family and Tony Paton won for Hunting. Judges were John Sommer Rev Jeffares and John Graham.
A new bylaw amends the parking meter rules allowing use of spaces without meters on Mondays and Thursday evenings. Metered hours run 9 am to 6 pm Monday Tuesday Wednesday and Saturday, and 9 am to 9 pm Thursday and Friday, with violations possible for nonpayment.
