Georgetown council rescinded a motion appointing members to the Georgetown Recreational Council and named a new slate representing schools parks churches men’s clubs and residents. The meeting covered utilities roads assessments sewer damage notices and plans for a new assessment with funding and street and railway submissions.
members of the Halton Jersey Breeders and families met at Esquesing Community Hall Stewarttown on February 15 to honor secretary J E Whitelock and his bride. Fuchre scores went to Mrs Devlin and Frank Dewhurst while consolation prizes went to Mrs Scott and John McClure. Edwin Harrop spoke for the group and presented a crystal chandelier to the couple following lunch. Doris Halls Orchestra provided an hour of dancing to close the event.
Mr Perc Olney of the Suxt Motors is attending the Chrysler Mechanic School at National Motors Toronto this week.
The Women's Association of Knox Presbyterian Church celebrated its twentieth anniversary with a dinner at Oddfellows Hall. Mrs Hugh Clark, the first president, received an orange, and memories of deceased members were honored with a two minute silence. Speakers highlighted nearly $16,000 raised, used to pay the manse mortgage and decorate the church basement and auditorium.
Monday review night at the Farm Forum featured pictures by Bob Early and a lively program of games including progressive Cootie. Prize winners included Mrs. Geo Burt Mrs. Win Norton Mrs. Edgar Beeney Mrs. Bert Sinclair Mrs. Clarence Varey and Miss Shirley Burt with a special door prize to Mrs. Horace Bell. Men cleared dishes after refreshments, earning good reports from the ladies.
The Ashgrove Women’s Edge held a well attended February meeting at Mrs. Frank Wilson’s home with members including Mrs. S K Ruddell and Mrs. Wright. A display of articles over 65 years sparked memories. donations were thanked to Halton Children’s Aid Salvation Army and other groups. A History of Ashgrove talk covered early settlers and hardships. the meeting closed with a National Anthem and social hour.
At the W I meeting last week Donald Lawson played piano pieces for the ladies and received thanks. The Stewarttown Branch of World Day of Prayer meets Friday at 3 PM in St Johns Church. The AYPA hosts a cuchre and dance in the Community Hall Friday evening.
Mrs H W Kennedy longtime Georgetown High School language teacher died in Toronto on a Thursday. Born Janet M Hutt she came from Lundys Lane and was one of seven children. She taught modern languages at Georgetown High School from 1940 until her marriage. She led the United Church Women’s Missionary Society and the Local Council of Women and lived in Toronto Waterloo and Georgetown before returning to Berwick Hall. She is survived by two sisters and a Georgetown professor brother. Funeral services were held at McClure Funeral Home with interment in Greenwood Cemetery Georgetown.
Members of fire brigades in the district met at the Robinson Cotton Mills in Woodbridge on February 17 to form a district association. A new name will be chosen at a meeting in Erin next month with Officers including Harry Savings president and David Bolton secretary.
Mr. Morris Saxe of Georgetown, longtime local businessman and creamery proprietor, was feted in Toronto last week for his 70th birthday. The event included a family dinner led by his daughter Mrs. Sam Ginsberg and later a larger cocktail gathering hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Percy Saxe with many relatives in attendance. Saxe received gifts including a gold watch for his role in helping European war orphans reach the Canadian Jewish Farm School in Georgetown, once located on the Cedarvale School for Girls site. Isabel Ellis of Washington visited town en route to Honolulu, Hawaii.

Georgetown Lawn Bowling Club hosted a social for departing members Mr. and Mrs. Ireland at Oddfellows Hall. Raiders defeat Acton 9-4 in a best of three hockey semifinal opener with goals by Kent Storey, Max Bradbury, O Donahue and Nash among others.

The Local Council of Women gathered Friday afternoon at Mrs W E Nodwell’s home with new president Mrs Fred Brassby presiding. A gift was presented to Mrs R T Paul for her four years as president. Miles Hettie Lawson read a report on the Peterborough provincial convention. A $5 donation supported the Haltom Music Festival and dues were paid to national and provincial councils. A social hour closed the meeting.
