Council approves education requisition after earlier refusal banks $131,000 monthly total. Dr Donna Denison notes $150,000 asked this year equals $900,000 yearly, and Reeve W Hunter concedes potential $131,000 monthly run rate. Tax bills urged to reveal education expenditures.
Blood donated at Georgetown Red Cross is refrigerated then transported to Toronto Blood Bank. Each bag is tested, labeled, and stored before being issued to hospitals served by the Toronto Depot. In 1968 Toronto area received 162,799 units. Georgetown collected 1,226.
Ontario council on Monday approved a capital forecast of 1,340,000 to be sent to the Ontario Municipal Board for approval in 1969. Mayor Emmerson warned the OMB may reduce the amount, noting a cautious stance with possible rejections of fire truck purchase and building additions.
A blaze started by chimney sparks damaged the roof of Fred Peters’s residence at 8 Charles St Sunday after five. Neighbors alerted firefighters who found the third floor sealed off and rafters charred. Roof secured with tarps and plastic sheeting. Earlier, a tire fire on a tractor owned by I Wiles at Lime House occurred Friday afternoon. Siren summoned crews to a dump fire Tuesday night.
Guy Rodgers of RR 3 Georgetown escaped serious injury when his snowmobile collided with a CNR freight train south of Highway 7 west of Esquesag Line Sunday. The machine wrecked, $400 damage. the train sustained $25 damage. Rodgers avoided injury by leaping clear as the engine halted after the impact.
Halton Board of Education communications committee hosted editors from Halton's daily and weekly papers at the Oakville Holiday Inn. They discussed informing the public about education matters amid a shift from municipal to county governance and considered moving semi monthly meetings to different locations to boost attendance. Press access to committee meetings and pre meeting agendas were debated, with editors suggesting a public contact list and advance notices.
The Georgetown Jaycees voted Tuesday night to investigate starting a local Big Brothers branch. Dr Myles Esterbrook and Harold Mahabir spoke on need, noting a 500 percent rise in juvenile court cases over four years. A Little Brother is a fatherless boy aged 8 to 16 needing guidance and companionship.
The Zeta Alpha chapter held its third meeting of the year on February 4 at Mrs. Renie Lewis's home. The program titled Inter pretation of Love featured a film Premarital Sex and Teenagers shown by Mrs. Moe Pennock, with a discussion. Proceeds support HOPE Workshop for the Mentally Retarded. the next gathering was announced for February 25 at Mrs. Cynthia Partjaycees’s home.
The Georgetown council voted the mayor a 2000 raise and set a 30 per meeting rate for councillors and a 30 per committee meeting with a 30 a day cap. With weekly meetings and two monthly committees, each councillor earns at least 180 monthly. The mayor also collects fees for hydro and police board duties. Reeve Hunter opposed certain changes, and Dr. Ern Hyde was absent. Remuneration is partially tax free per the income tax department. Council can now draw accrued salary anytime.
Georgetown hosted a gathering of the Ontario Arenas Association with the Board of Parks Management and arena manager Don Gosling as hosts. Members toured the arena before a noon dinner at the region auditorium while wives visited Beaumont Knitting Co. Ltd. and were later entertained at North Halton Golf and Country Club. President Harry Johnson of Lindsay chaired dinner. Cec Nobes thanked the hosts. The association, formed 22 years ago, counts 182 arenas and 85 associates, and runs courses on refrigeration, communications and administration for arena managers and publishes its own magazine.
At Ross farm on the Ch Line a 15 acre air site will host a 2000 foot runway and 40 by 40 hangar. The project, approved by the Department of Transport, aims to support a flying school run by Chris Samson of Toronto and a light plane service by Helmut Scheidhauer of Central Airways. Local officials pressed for site review and community input before issuing the building permit, which passed unanimously after assurances from landowner Joe Ross.
E G Richardson chairman of the Cedarvale Community Board resigns citing the council's dismissal of committee members J Quinn and Mrs Dora Sutherland. The curt letter was read by the council and received in silence.
Ten youths, five local and five from out of town, were jailed briefly at Georgetown Police after a scuffle at Memorial Arena following a Junior C hockey game. Five officers broke up the disturbance as Ajax players and fans prepared to board a bus. All were released after identifications and will be summonsed to court on disturbing or obstructing police charges.
Georgetown Kinette Club held a Mother and Daughter banquet at Stan's Restaurant with full attendance. President Noreen Miehm presented pins and by-laws to Lorna Michasin and Lois Walker. Members volunteered to compile phone lists for the Red Cross Blood donor Clinic on March 10 and discussed plans for the March Rummage Sale. Theresa Leyes, Lori Diegel, and Eileen McLeod won games, while Nancy Ellis and her daughter Clarey claimed the raffle prizes.
