Trustee John Mintern says red tape blocks Centennial addition and a Moore Park school, risking crowded September spaces. Council sought Ontario Municipal Board approval for a 680900 bur dent issue after a 40 student surge, with 400 more in the east and 100 in Moore Park expected. Approval hoped within weeks.
Georgetown High opens its library four nights a week from seven to nine thirty as part of a new policy to invite public use. Ten thousand five hundred books circulate but the night library does not lend. Each night features a volunteer librarian from Mrs Barfatt to Mrs Silk. Boy Scout week runs February 14 to 25 with Cubs Scouts and Venturers presenting activities to showcase scouting.
Police report two three car collisions at Guelph and Maple and Guelph and Mountainview intersections causing about 1200 dollars in property damage. Vehicles involved include Douglas Samuel Steen and Shirley M. Martin and Brende Anne Vivian. A third major-damage incident occurred Friday in the Standard Products lot damaging George Elmer Roberts's car.
Georgetown Girl Guide Company and supporters raised 1600 for the March of Dimes through a matinee Ice Follies trip to Toron. Guides, teens, and adults including Mrs. Mary Cooper and Mrs. Donna Robbins organized the drive, with 20 canvassers and 50 percent teens. The funds aid the Rehabilitation Foundation for the disabled.
The town council plans a committee meeting on February 27 to discuss routing buses off Sirest. Gray Coach will meet council representatives and may attend that night or at a conference to address rerouting concerns. The council has asked for a fee for a bus stop and considers a new route via Dane and Charlie Streets starting March 1.
Maple Avenue reconstruction from Main Street to the west limits is in the council plans for this year under a connecting link agreement with Halton County. The road remains a main county artery through the town, with the county bearing a large share of maintenance costs.
John Hole told council that a new speed limit sign reading 30 mile limit ends is confusing drivers. He says it implies motorists may accelerate to 50 mph. The sign sits at the edge of a 25 mph zone with no preceding 25 mph sign for several yards. Road chairman Bill Smith will contact the Highways Department to raise the danger.
Georgetown Raiders defeated the Derbies 4-2 to take a 3-0 lead in their best of five quarterfinal series. Derbies opened scoring with Workman at 13 17 of the first, but Robinson tied it, Perk regained the lead, and McMullen tied 2-2 early in the third. Lavell sparked the winner at 8 26, with Hay and Larmand adding insurance as Peavey held the net for Georgetown.
The town plans a 200 foot no parking zone in front of Holy Cross Church after officials cited accident hazards on Sundays. A new Maple Avenue garage near the waterworks, estimated at 100000 dollars and costing almost two million in total projects, aims to house municipal offices including engineering and the works superintendent. Only critic Wheldon Emmerson opposed the garage, arguing capital expenditures are too high. Other officials urged seeking Ontario Municipal Board approval, saying the project could save rental costs in the long run.
Town council on Monday allocated about 5000 dollars to continue drilling west of Princess Anne Drive to locate additional town water. Officials expect more water may be needed this year to meet industrial and residential growth.
A Norval family fled a devastating kitchen fire at their east village home, with Georgetown firefighters battling the blaze before and after six and ten o clock. Neighbors aided by moving furniture to safety and offering shelter in Brampton while the couple searches for a new rented place. The owner, Mrs Thomas McMichael of Toronto, reported loss of some antiques.
Two Georgetown men received Canadian Centennial Medals at a Monday council meeting. Walter Gray and Mayor Joseph Gibbons were honored for long service to municipal affairs, with Gray a former councillor and deputy-reeve. Recipients praised their community work as medals were presented by Councillor W. R. Smith.
The Halon detachment of the OPP reports several complaints about dumping on township roads. The offence carries a $60 fine and court action may follow for violators.
Georgetown Police Department asks The Herald to notify the public of a telephone number change from 877-2411-1077-2224. Chief Harley Lowe urges residents to update telephone directories with the new contact number.
