Ratepayers at a high school meeting outlined hospital needs and local financing. Speakers described a planned 31 bed addition, government funding for operating costs, and capital equipment funded by local donations. Civic groups urged safety, emergency communications, ambulance expansion, and continued community beautification projects.
Regional planning minister Darcy McKeough proposed merging Hatton and Peel into one region. Deputy Reeve Tom Hill opposes losing ten bottom lots and favors Halton and Peel remaining separate. Reeve George Currie has not fully studied the plan. Councillor Russell Miller finds it workable. Georgetown figures express cautious support or critique, noting potential financial and representation issues and calls for direct election of the higher tier.
The Georgetown Branch of the Canadian Red Cross Society names Michael Foot as 1969 campaign chairman. Born in England, Foot is a University of London graduate in electrical engineering and now resides in Georgetown after moving from Brampton. He works as an electronic engineer at Northern Electric.
At a Georgetown Library Board meeting Tuesday night Hugh Powell was chosen chairman for the coming year. Mrs. Dora Sutherland was reelected treasurer and librarian Miss Marjorie Nazer was elected secretary. The board, appointed by three bodies, includes separate and public school appointees plus town council members. Names currently serving include Mrs. Dora Sutherland and Michael Foot as separate school appointees, Mrs. Alice Mintern, Howard Allen and Murray Hehley as public school appointees, and Hugh Powell and Anne Currie as town appointees. One town seat remains to be filled. Plans may bring a touring puppet show to the library during winter holidays, with a possible Thursday opening solely for the show.
Eden Mills Enterprises offered 1.66 acres on Princess Ann Drive at 3000 per acre, to the committee. land would need a right of way near hospital entrance, current route crosses hospital property. Mayor Murray Dickenson challenged Mayor Emmerson to a snowmobile race during the winter carnival. no action given mayor absent. Halton County Separate School Board asks Maple Ave sidewalks between Charles and Main, to be built if Maple Ave is reconstructed. Council approves by law to sell town industrial lots 8 9 and 10 to Wm McNally with terms and restrictions set in the by law.
A last minute entry skipped by Dot Simpson of Sherwood Park won the Five Year Filly Bonspiel at North Halton Curling Club. The Simpson rink earned 30 percent of points in the late draw to claim the trophy after a late addition due to a cancellation. Early winner was Vivien Kruger’s North Halton rink with 29 points, followed by Marjory Allan’s North Halton team with 21 points.
A Georgetown couple, Mr. and Mrs. James Costigan, celebrated 60 years of marriage on Sunday. They reside at 55 John St. E. Friends and relatives visited, with calls from son Ray in Summitville Ohio and grandson Alex in Pittsburgh Pa. Costigan, a 37 year retiree from Abitibi Provincial Paper Ltd, served as Ward and Georgetown council representative in the early forties.
Georgetown council voted against paying the February requisition of 131000 to Halton County Board of Education, citing lack of notice and unclear projected yearly costs. The motion failed with only Deputy Reeve Art Speight supporting payment, while council sought a board representative for further discussion.
North Halton OPP reported two cars colliding on North Halton Golf Club property Monday. Margaret Helson of RR 2 Georgetown sustained about 700 dollars in damage to her car while Alan Beeney of RR 2 also faced about 300 dollars in damage. Constable Terry Devine investigated the 3 p.m. event.
