A Monday town council resolution would bar the immediate family of a sitting councillor from town employment. Debate focused on defining “immediate family” with Dr. Hildebrandt asking where it stops and Dr. Powera noting brothers and sisters could be included.
Mayor Gibbons raised doubts about council authority to spend on the old post office in late 1063. He seeks a written opinion from the town solicitor as details show 2371 dollars spent on the building, including a 726 dollar labor bill and 183 dollar boiler repairs, plus 475 legal fees and 188 for coal.
Council Monday discussed a dogs at large issue in eastern town limits and parking on Rexway Drive raised by Dr Bill Smith. Police enforce highway parking rules to curb hazards near schools while talks target municipal building repainting and a ratepayer protest over sewer charges blamed on exempt industry.
A Traffic Safety Report from Cadgetown Police Department shows 1386 accidents in 1983, up twenty from 1982, with 58 injuries and a $51 000 property damage bill. Primary causes were inattentive driving and excessive speed, while safety patrols at three public schools reported no student involvement in accidents.
Georgetown council funds a Good Roads Convention trip for Feb 27 28 in Toronto as road committee prepares reservations. Road chairman W F Hunter seeks clarity on room use while Dr Bill Smith and Dr Young express support amid council chamber debate and mayoral resistance.
The St George Anglican junior choirs were guests at dinners hosted by the church ladies. On January 20 the women's auxiliary hosted the boys with Rev John McMulkin and choir director George DeKleer as head table guests. Toasts honored the Queen. a film show followed. A girls event followed with the Daughters of the Church serving dinner and similar tributes and thanks.
Two hundred youths attend the West Toronto WYPS winter conference at Knox church in Georgetown marking the 15th annual rally. Delegates from George town and Toronto heard Rev Nogman Young and Rev John Hale don speak on faith, truth, and modern dilemmas while activities included worship, workshops, a square dance, and a choir project planning session.
Claude Kentner the lone original member was re elected chairman of the Georgetown Planning Board last week with vice chairman retired councilor Walter Gray and other members Fred Maveal Roy Warwick Ro Francs 3 Young and Mayor Gibbons. The board urged rezoning of the library and Reid house on Market Street to C2 from R3 and discussed Water Street properties and a Maple Ave East rezoning study plan. It noted the town can force cleanup of unsightly areas under existing bylaw including old cars furniture and junk and asked council for guidance.
Dr Charles Hildebrandt argues an incinerator is the only solution to disposal problems discussed by the council. Dr Vandebrandt says a $50 000 incinerator could pay for itself in ten years with lower contractor fees and reduced garbage volume. A week end fire at the disposal site is under control and the area is being filled to prevent recurrence.
The town council weighs a two year lease for police cars with a leasing firm presenting cost figures. He could also supply data for other vehicles. Tenders for a new four ton dump truck were opened but the council postponed delaying them to next week.
The Little Theatre Group presents Under the Sycamore Tree at a February 38 non public High School performance with University of Western Ontario professor G Z Buckley as adjudicator. Cast includes Ron Hill Vera Macdonald Chris Fisher Full Barratt Ray Walton Carolyn Dalfen Cord Hunt and the Fisher sisters.
Mr and Mrs Howard Nolnies visited New York City staying at the Americana Hotel during the Kennedy Awards dinner period. They did not meet President Johnson but observed heavy security with policemen on foot, horseback and motorcycles around the hotel area. The presidential car carried Secret Service men on both running boards as dignitaries arrived and departed. The Holmes couple extended their trip after an unusable return flight forced a Montreal stopover.
