Cleave and Leslie to Contest Reeveship

Municipal Council last evening discussed parking in front of the post office. Eastbound motorists should use the south side of Mills Street for ten minute parking and westbound on the north side. Officers noted careless parking on Main Street and urged adherence to regulations. Several motions passed including appointments and payments for 1940 town services and salaries.

Norval Resident Celebrates 83rd Birthday

Matthew Laidlaw lifelong Norval district resident marked his 83rd birthday at his son Norman Laidlaw's home. Born on the Fifth Line West of Chinguacoisy Township, he served as a substitute Methodist preacher since age 16. Family from Norval and Brampton attended with nearly all of his 14 grandchildren present.

Easter Date Advances to March 24 in Earliest Rise

Lent starts February 7 marking Ash Wednesday. Easter Sunday falls March 24 this year, Palm Sunday on St Patrick's Day. Since 1500 to 2000 Easter on March 24 has occurred only in limited historic years, with April 25 as the latest possible date.

Lions Hear About the Shoe Industry

Georgetown Lions Club met at the McChbon Hotel on Monday evening. Chief John D. Kelly presided and Col. Ballantine introduced the speaker Mr. Dayfoot who spoke on The Canadian Shoe Industry. He traced footwear from ancient hides to early sandals and noted papyrus sandals dating around two thousand years old.

Annual Seed Fair to Be Staged in Georgetown

W. E. Breckon announces Halton Crop Improvement Association will stage the county Seed Fair in Georgetown on March 8 and 9. Deputy Minister W. R. Beek will be guest speaker, with a baby chick show and junior judging and a display planned in Toronto at the King Edward Hotel week of February 12.

Annual Knox Church Meeting Reports Strong Year

Knox Presbyterian Church held its annual meeting in the school room on Tuesday evening January 30. The Moderator Rev D D Davidson presided. Reports from various organizations highlighted a successful year. Officers elected include Budget Treasurer Miss J M McDougall and Church Funds Treasurer H F Gorring. Fred Thompson and Russell Hepburn joined the Board. R B Foulis and J Mackenzie were re elected auditors. A social hour and lunch followed with wives of managers and elders serving.

Streetsville elects W O Brownridge as president for the Toronto Township Agricultural Society annual meeting. District President Addresses Norval Institute

The Norval Institute held its February meeting at Mrs. E. C. Reid’s home with District President Mrs. Cowan as guest speaker on homemakers duties. The event featured a Red Cross report by Palermo, musical selections by Miss Helen Browne and Mrs. W G Browne, a humorous reading by Mrs. W Graham, and a Treasure Tail Contest led by Mrs. Reid.

United Church Holds Annual Meeting in Georgetown

The Georgetown United Church held its annual meeting in the church Sunday School room with Rev. F. Overend presiding and W. Deans as secretary. Reports showed growing membership and finances, missionary giving up, and a new Tennis Club report plus plans for the centennial celebration.

Brother of Mrs Blake Leslie Died in Toronto

Joseph Leslie Thompson, 53, born in Erin and longtime resident of Trenton and Toronto, died suddenly of a heart attack in Toronto. Survived by widow Jennie Slater Thompson, son Frank, sister Mrs Blake Leslie of Georgetown. Funeral held at M Kitching Funeral Home Danforth Ave and graveside at Erin cemetery.

Acton couple wed at St. Joseph’s Church

A wedding in St. Joseph's Church Acton united Miss Eileen Kowalski daughter of Mrs A Molozzi Acton with Mr John Cummins son of Mr and Mrs Martin Cummins Georgetown. The ceremony conducted by Rev J L McBride featured georgette gowns tulle veils and orange blossom bouquets. After mass a reception at the bride's home followed before the couple planned to reside in Georgetown.

World Day of Prayer Service Plans Worldwide

Women of Christian churches will gather for World Day of Prayer under the theme In quietness and confidence shall be your strength. Miss Muriel Lester and Miss Doris Lester, founders of Kingsley Hall, prepared the program adapted for Canada. CBC will air a coast to coast World Prayer broadcast on Thursday February 8 at 4 15 p.m. Local interdenominational service offered at Knox Presbyterian Church Georgetown on Friday February 9 at 3 p.m.

McGill Couple Celebrates Diamond Jubilee in Georgetown

Mr. and Mrs. John Jamieson McGill marked their diamond wedding anniversary last week. Born in Toronto and near Limehouse, they wed at Georgetown Presbyterian Church with groomsman John Lawson listed. They have two sons in Ottawa and Georgetown and two daughters in London and Coldwater. The Herald offers congratulations and wishes for continued happiness.

Esquesing Council Buys Snow Plow Wing for $129.60

Esquesing Township Council held its regular meeting with Deputy Reeve C H May and Councillors present. The minutes note multiple payments including road sheets, relief accounts, births and deaths registration, dog tags, supplies, and salaries. The council approved the Sawyer Massey snow plough wing purchase at $129.60 and directed tax collection rolls be returned to the collector.
