War era notes list service personnel on Christmas leave including LACs from Canada and the UK as well as Royal Canadian Mounted Rifles members. A Beloved English soldier crafted a unique gift for a Newfoundland family while a Christmas greeting from Italy features a titled crest and a patriotic quotation.
The Pall term closed with a Christmas concert for pupils amid high illness. Attendance fell to times with 125 absences. Red Cross efforts by Ross Bytes raised 31 for various causes, plus 550 for cartage. Navy week activities yielded 29.50 and 0.5 ton magazines shipped. War Savings Stamps totaled 535.25 for term. grand total since January 1941 reached 1073.25.
In a quiet Lambton United Church service on December 17, Mary Hamilton of Medicine Hat Alberta and Raymond Hilton Thompson of Georgetown were married. The Rev Dr Lockhart officiated and the couple now reside in Georgetown.
A partial notice shows Mrs. Mary Bally of Stewarttown and Miss Austin contributing to the Christmas Cheer for British Children Fund. The White Gift Service at Ashgrove United Church is noted with a total amount and date referenced as December 2nd.
Agnes Warren Wehrman born May 20 1885 in Ashgrove Ontario died at 58 near Angus Nebraska after six year illness from strokes. She married OC F P Wehrman in 190? and leaves husband daughter Norma Lorraine and son Clair along with grandchildren and siblings. Funeral held at Angus Christian Church with pastor Rev G M Foust officiating.
The Herald Soldiers Comforts Fund shows cash on hand of 673.54 and 100.04 from Junior Red Cross. Public School and Victory Garden proceeds amount to 4.00 and 2.80 respectively. Total balances and prizes are recorded as 970.98 on Wednesday December 2.
The family expresses thanks to neighbors and friends for kindness and expressions of sympathy after the loss of their beloved mother Aire L. Carter.
Christmas services are listed for St George's Mt Alban's Glen Williams Munster Stewarttown Norval Hambly and more with Holy Communion on Christmas Eve and Day. Programs include Sunday School Carol services Evensong and Christmas music led by several pastors and rectors.
The United Church will hold Sunday School at 10 a.m. and Christmas services at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. The evening service features Rev. T. R. Todd of Toronto as the preacher. A very merry Christmas to all.
The Soldiers Comforts Committee collects grateful letters from overseas troops. A sample note to secretary Mrs. W. V. Grant thanks the group for sending smokes and comforts, signed by Petty Officer Jack Toot of the Royal Canadian Navy.
Wartime edition notes a Community Christmas Tree event at the Municipal Building with Santa arriving at 3 pm. Mrs. Oliver and the Lame Heats Regimental Band entertain as children receive oranges and apples. a charity raffle offers prizes including a turkey and geese, with numerous ticket holders listed.
Local 474 held its first Christmas party at the Legion Room last Friday evening with about six members, seven friencias children, and management personnel in attendance. A program featured a National Anthem solo, accordion and nightingale voices, a Santa visit with gifts and oranges, and a luncheon. Committee members included Thomas Eason Jr and C Brandford with aides listed. Thomas Eason Jr presented chocolates to the committee ladies as the event closed.
The Baby Branch Christmas Tea at St George's Church drew many babies and mothers last Wednesday in the Sunday School room. Rector Venerable Wo Ge QO Thompson led the opening remarks and gifts were given to each child on the Baby Branch Roll. Tea was served at decorated tables with Mrs A Dewhurst in charge, assisted by Mrs J Hall and other committee members.
Spr Frank Larus of the Royal Canadian Engineers is reported wounded in action in Italy, according to word received by his parents Mr and Mrs M Larus. He has been within five miles of his father's birthplace and his grandparents but has not yet seen his relatives. We hope for his speedy recovery.
Ontario leads Canada by announcing an increase in old age pensions. The plan targets more than 60,000 seniors and aims to implement the higher payments without delay across the province.
Ashgrove praise for Miss Kean and pupils after a December 1 concert in the church basement featuring carols plays recitations and solos by Viola Brigden and a Cardimas Walt. John Bird played piano as Santa distributed gifts and treats to wrap up a joyful evening.
